If you have ever seen the Airtel 4G challenge commercial which has been aired on TV, you'd learn that the mobile network had been advertising that if customers find a faster network, it will provide a free mobile connection for life.
According to a report in the BusinessLine, the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) has passed an order seeking Airtel to withdraw or modify the commercial by October 7. According to ASCI, the fact that certain facts and disclaimers were not communicated in the commercial makes it misleading.
According to the Airtel Challenge commercial, if a user finds a faster network, Airtel will pay the mobile bills for life.
On its part, Airtel has sought a review of the order and is providing data to back the claims made in the advertisement. According to a report in the Economic Times, An Airtel spokesperson said: "We are confident of getting a favourable response from them."
Earlier this year, Idea Cellular was pulled up for the IIN campaign. Idea Cellular claimed that the Idea Internet Network (IIN) was portrayed as an educational platform. The ASCI had questioned how IIN could offer education comparable to that in an educational institution. In the commercial set in the background of Haryana, the message was of IIN offering education and girls could empower themselves using IIN. According to ASCI, the ad was misleading by claiming to empower women in addition to disrespecting the state of Haryana.
