Google had recently enabled the option of payment through netbanking, apart from the existing credit and debit card options, in India on the Play Store. While carrier billing was also rolled out, it was limited to Idea network users.
Today the carrier billing option seems to have expanded for Airtel and Vodafone postpaid customers as well. While the addition of the new method was officially announced in October at the Google Playtime event in India, the rollout began over the past couple of weeks.
Carrier billing payment basically allows you to buy apps, music, books and movies from the Google Play Store and the cost is reflected in the user's mobile postpaid bill. This feature has been available on iOS and Apple in a number of countries, however this feature was finally brought to India this year.
We have checked and can confirm that there is indeed an option for carrier billing under the 'Add a new payment' option. However, it requires an SMS authorisation which doesn't seem to be working as of yet. According to the Google support page, the accepted payment methods still lists Idea as the direct billing carrier in India. This means that support for Airtel and Vodafone is currently underway and will be enabled in the coming few days.
