After iOS, Google Play now under attack by Hacking Team spyware: Trend Micro

According to a new report, along with iOS, Google Play is also under the attack of Italian Hacking team. Security firm Trend Micro says Google Play is under attack by the same Italian company Hacking Team which is known to compromise iOS device, whether jailbroken or not.

The fake news app, BeNews – a backdoor app that uses the name of defunct news site BeNews, was downloaded up to 50 times before it was removed from Google Play on July 7. Trend Micro, who claim to have found the backdoor’s source code in the leak, believes that the Hacking Team provided the app to customers to be used as a lure to download RCSAndroid malware on a target’s Android device.

The backdoor, ANDROIDOS_HTBENEWS.A , ‘can affect but not limited to’ Android versions starting from 2.2 Froyo to 4.4.4 KitKat. It is capable of circumventing Google Play restrictions by using dynamic loading technology. First it will ask only for three permissions, but dynamic loading technology will later allow the app to download and execute a partial of code from the Internet.

It is highly recommended to be alert while downloading apps and keep your device updated with mobile security software.
