After feminist, UK lawmaker gets threats on Twitter

Even as the British Police continues to investigate rape threats received by feminist Caroline Criado-Perez on Twitter, another female lawmaker from the country has received abusive tweets on the micro blogging website.

Labour Party Member of Parliament Stella Creasy was targeted by trolls on Twitter after she came out in support for Criado-Perez. Creasy received tweets threatening her with rape and murder just like the feminist campaigner Criado-Perez did.

“You send me a rape threat you morons I will report you to the police & ensure action taken,” she wrote in a tweet after retweeting some of the violent tweets she received. Creasy has already informed the police regarding the threatening posts.

The trolls versus feminists issue has spilled over onto the Internet, taking Twitter into the storm hard. The matter began when Criado-Perez led a successful campaign last week to make celebrated author Jane Austen the face of a new bank note in the UK. Her face would be replacing that of Charles Darwin in 2017.

This did not go down too well with some trolls on the social networking website, who ended up issuing threatening tweets to Criado-Perez. Her supporters pointed out the lack of an accessible “Report Abuse” button on Twitter and even started a petition urging the micro blogging website to make better arrangements for the same.Twitter, on its part, wrote a blog post announcing that it was making efforts in order to let users report abuse on the site better.

Meanwhile, a 21-year-old who was arrested from Manchester in connection with the threats has been questioned and released on bail. A second arrest has been made, this time of a 25-year-old as a part of the ongoing investigation of “malicious communications”.
