After all that hype fuelled by Sundar Pichai, we get a Nougat

Nougat it is! But, what is it? That’s how some users reacted to the not-so-popular dessert name. Most users were hoping for Nutella, and after KitKat that seemed like a possibility. On the other hand, back at home, most users were hoping for an Indian dessert to be the next statue in Google’s gardens, and why not. And, this wasn’t the first time either, as we’ve seen in past suggestions like Ladoo, Motichor ladoo, lassi, and more. Remember, how back in 2013 (Lollipop year), a group of students from IIT-Kharagpur – which also happens to be Pichai’s alma mater – wrote an open letter  suggesting Lassi. We weren’t really hopeful back then, as chances the company could take up the suggestion over an international dessert was next to ’no’. But, Pichai’s India visit in December last year rekindled the hope as he hinted at the possibility of an Indian dessert by promising a poll to decide the next name. https://twitter.com/KeralaTourism/status/735494063944667141 It instantly triggered a lot of talk with people awaiting the polls and encouraging others to vote for an Indian dessert. One of Kerala’s favorite dessert suddenly seemed like a front-runner and soon there was hype around how we could possibly make Neyappam (or possibly Nankatai) the name for the upcoming Android iteration. https://twitter.com/MaryamDodhy/status/748645526879543297 Interestingly,  there were online campaigns asking people to vote for Neyappam, and lets not forget the website build specifically in the hope for the new name -  androidneyyappam.com .  It was further fuelled as Pichai was positioning India as an extremely important market for Android. Needless to say, India is an Android dominated smartphone market. So, the new name brings disappointment there. But, Nougat makes it even worse, as it clearly doesn’t seem like a people favourite name. Moreover, it doesn’t seem like Google was looking for a globally popular name, otherwise Nutella would have made the cut. Or was it, but the deal didn’t work? In any case, after all the hype Pichai leaves us with a ‘No’ugat.

The disappointment was evident on Twitter. https://twitter.com/BK_Krithika/status/748556755357995008 https://twitter.com/PratikG_/status/748689821716115456 Do let us know what you think about the new name - Android Nougat - in the comments section below.
