Adobe AIR for Linux Reaches the End

Adobe has been a dominant entity on almost all kinds of computing devices starting from PCs right up to mobile phones and smart TVs, in the form of Flash. Adobe AIR has been another recent project, which is basically a multi-platform environment for applications and it’s been around for a while. Adobe has now decided to stop all development for the AIR environment on Linux.  Adobe plans to have AIR present on all popular mobile devices such as Android, Blackberry Tablet OS and iOS devices by the end of the year.

The Adobe AIR environment has received very few downloads (0.5 per cent) in comparison to all the other platforms. Adobe is putting together a porting kit which can be used by their partners to complete their applications for all Linux platform related projects. Adobe by themselves will no longer release environment builds and SDKs for AIR. The last version of Adobe AIR was 2.6. This means that all future updates will not be available for Linux users unless it’s been created by one of the partner developers. In the near future, it also means that any applications that require a newer version of Adobe AIR, beyond 2.6 will not run on Linux.
