Aaron Paul is Braking Bad in the Need for Speed movie trailer

The trailer for the upcoming movie adaptation of popular racing game franchise, Need for Speed, is out now. The trailer shows actor Aaron Paul (extremely popular thanks to his role as Jesse Pinkman on Breaking Bad) being an underground street racer. Curiously, while the trailer does have quite a bit in common with another popular car-movie franchise (Fast and Furious), Need for Speed seems to take itself much more seriously than the latter.

The plot of the movie revolves around a street racer who is framed for a crime he didn’t commit by his partner. It follows the exploits of the racer as he sets out for revenge against his ex-partner. The movie seems very loosely based on the Need for Speed franchise, which wasn’t popular for its plot in the first place. The only thing the movie seems to have common with the gaming franchise, aside from the name, seems to be the presence of cars.

The Need for Speed movie is set to hit the big screen in February 2014. It is being written by George Gatnis and produced by his brother John of Red Steel fame. It is directed by Scott Waugh (Act of Valor).

Need For Speed is the first major project expenditure DreamWorks has made since the company came out of suspended animation while waiting for Reliance to invest cash in a re-up. The studio acquired the movie rights for the Need for Speed series back in June, 2012. There is no indication of why the movie was fast tracked. EA and DreamWorks explained during their joint announcement that the film adaptation would be “a fast-paced, high-octane film rooted in the tradition of the great car culture films of the 70s while being extremely faithful to the spirit of the video game franchise”.

The next game in the franchise is Need for Speed: Rivals, which will be hitting stores later this year.

Ever heard of one of those people who just never seem to shut up about something? Shunal is like the nerd equivalent of that guy. Believe us when we say that he can go on talking about games and smartphones for hours on end. We do manage to find some insight in his insane ramblings though, and through his moronic facade, he does seem to know more than he lets on. Sadly enough, it always ends up being about gaming with him. Or stupid, stupid puns.
