99.9% of things in VR have yet to be discovered says Google VP of virtual reality Clay Bavor

The Daydream VR headset and controller has been released in the US and **reviews have already started coming in** . But according to Clay Bavor, vice president of VR at Google, it is still early days for virtual reality and we are yet to completely exploit it. Speaking at a Recode event in California, Bavor said, “The headset we’re launching today, we’re using it as, ‘Hey, here’s an example.’ We’re in such early days of VR — 99.9 percent of things in VR have yet to be discovered.” According to him Google is looking at making Android as the main OS for VR. Right now VR headsets have yet to go mainstream. Bavor says that VR will get popular when there are enough users, enough devices and enough things to do on VR. Daydream VR platform is offering video content with YouTube VR, games as well as some tie-in with Google Street View which will let you check out popular monuments and Google Art and Culture which will let you see around 50 museums across the globe in VR. Speaking on the choice to go with a soft cloth material for the Daydream VR headset, Bavor said, “What we saw was that some things were complicated, to just get everything connected and get into VR. We thought control could be a bit better. VR is exciting, but not that approachable to many people. The devices look a bit intimidating. So we looked at it more like a piece of clothing. That’s let us down this path of ‘what if we use materials like a micro-fibre fabric or breathable cloth’. The result is something we are proud of.” Google isn’t the only player in the VR business though. Facebook owned Oculus has two consumer offerings in the form of Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR, HTC has Vive whereas Microsoft has a mixed reality headset in the form of HoloLens which works on the Windows ecosystem.
