802.11n the latest Wi-Fi standard has not even been ratified yet and already IEEE have begun work on a new wireless standard simply called 802.11m. Though the new standard will debut in 2008, unlike Wi-Fi it promises to deliver 1Gbps transfer rate wirelessly.

To achieve 1 Gbps, 802.16m will be using multiple-input/multiple-output ( MIMO), which was introduced first as a part of 802.11g and is an integral part of 802.11n. The IEEE committee, that is working on 802.16m has indicated that though the new standard will offer fantastic speeds, it will not fall under the WiMAX family. In the future, there will be cross compatibility with upcoming 4G wireless networks and WiMAX.
