Android and iOS have managed to grasp the biggest chunk of the smartphone OS war because of a number of reason, the biggest being the availability of apps for them. The developer community has been at work for a long time churning out a whole bunch of apps for them - both free and paid. Windows Phone 7, although a promising operating system has been plagued by lack of apps, in comparison at least. The scene has changed of late but an analysis done by Winsource states that some 76 percent of all apps found on Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace are available for Android and iOS devices already. In short, only 24 percent of all those apps are exclusive to Microsoft’s platform.
Not many WP7 exclusive apps out there
It was found that many of those apps that were exclusive to WP7 were in fact, Xbox live titles which of course were developed by Microsoft Studios. Winsource browsed through the list of top apps in the Marketplace. After preparing a list of the top 100 apps, they cross-checked this list with the Android and iOS app stores and found that the WP Marketplace had very few exclusive apps. Microsoft has put in a lot of money to get their app base expanded. They have paid developers to make apps in the past and it has helped, as compared to some of the other platforms that have failed at making a mark due to the lack of apps.
Still, the report by Winsource could be a little incomplete as there are a number of ways to look at it. Only the top 100 apps were compared, instead of the entire listing of apps. This is understandable as it’s a massive task to complete and crosscheck with the iOS and iTunes app store. Most smartphone users hear of popular apps from others and from the web, so they end up using those apps across platforms. These already popular cross-platform apps make it to the list, so there might be many more exclusive apps that are present on the WP Marketplace, just not popular enough to make it to the top 100 list.
