5 Things that make the Moto X cool

Wondering why the hype for Moto X? Well, for one, it’s the first real “ Google-phone” and as we have seen, you can customise it till the cows come home. But if you need more reasons, here are five things that make Moto X cool.

Only responds to you
The Moto X is always listening for your voice commands. The Touchless Control of Moto X is possible because of the low-power contextual computing and natural language processors that Motorola designed and works in sync with the Snapdragon S4 dual-core SoC. Thanks to this, you can start searching on the Moto X without unlocking the phone. But when you first “train” the phone, it captures your voice and only unlocks when you speak. What are the magic words? An “OK, Google Now ” starts the app, but the phone will only unlock if it recognises the voice as yours. Early hands-on reports say that it works even in a small room full of people.

In Moto X, voice commands not only search, but can be used to control almost everything from reading text messages to opening apps, making phone calls, asking about the weather and more support will be added in the next few months.

Snap judgement
Just like search, the camera on the Moto X can be brought on without hitting unlock. Unlike the voice-activated search, this one relies on motion sensors “listening” for your gesture. The quick camera trick on the Moto X is a flick of the wrists thrice. This is Quick Capture. The camera comes on and you can click a photograph with just a tap on the display. Tap and hold, and you are in burst mode. Easy peasy.

Smart clock
Motorola estimated that people pull out their phones 60-100 times a day to check the time or see what’s beeping. With the new smartphone, the company eliminated the need to unlock the phone to see this. Since the Moto X has an AMOLED panel, individual LEDs can be switched on without the entire display being on. Motorola has something called Active Display, which uses this technique to flash the time on the display, when you simply pull the phone out of your pocket.

The Active Display notifications system

Minimal notifications
LED notification light is great, but if you are getting pinged all day long, it will affect battery life. To counter this, but also bring a quick noticeable alert to users, Moto X has Active Notifications, which uses the same technique as Active Display to show alerts. Of course, if LEDs are going to be lit up all the time, battery life will still get adversely affected. So the Moto X knows not to flash an alert when the phone is in your pocket or lying face down and doesn’t push out the alert to the display. Once the user pulls the phone out of the pocket or flips it up, the alert comes on. Tapping on a notification takes you to the app that showed it without you needing to unlock the phone. But a swipe and it disappears without a trace, without switching the display on.

Auto assistant
Google has upped the ante when it comes to its competition against Apple’s Siri. In the Moto X, the idea of a digital assistant reaches its next evolutionary step. In Moto X, it’s called Moto Assist and it’s automatic. Get into a car with your Moto X and it knows when you start moving and will automatically put itself in car mode. So it will shout out the name of the person calling you, read out the text messages and respond to voice commands to change the track playing. When you exit the car, it switches back to normal mode. If you’re in a meeting and you have entered the details into your calendar, Moto X will automatically silence itself and send an auto-reply to any emails about your availability.

Have your say. What do you think is the coolest part about the Moto X?
