As I mentioned in my Death Knight Tanking Guide , the Death Knight class is designed in a way that makes it ideal only for advanced WoW-heads. If you’re relatively new to the game though, you’ll need all the help you can get. To give you that extra edge and nudge you in the right direction, you can always recruit the help of these add-ons.
RuneWatch
RuneWatch is by far, the most useful companion to any Death Knight (other than that faithful ghoul, of course). The addon provides a very convinient way for Death Knights to keep track of what runes they’ve used up, how much runic power they have, and what diseases are up on the mob they’ve targeted. Such information is usually scattered over one’s screen (the rune info and runic power’s in the upper right corner with the healthbar), while the disease info is usually in the debuff area near the minimap on the screen.
This mod does an awesome job of providing all relevant information in the middle of the screen, using an aesthetically pleasing frame to adorn your runes/runic power on. The customizable options are plenty too, and the profile feature helps you save up different configurations for different specs. If you’re a Death Knight, this will make your life a whole lot easier.
DeathKnight.Info Runes
For those of you who think having the rather large RuneWatch interface in or around the center of the screen is too barring, you can always opt for DeathKnight.Info Runes. This nifty visual upgrade modifies your Rune bar below your Runic Power bar to a gorgeous looking Knights of the Ebon Blade sword. You can move it around the screen too, to fit it nicely in a corner where it’s visible, yet not obstructive. The best part about it is that it allows you to make the runes really prominent and display runic power numerically, showing you what resources you have, to work with.
You can change the orientation of the blade, change the skin, and scale it to a large size so that you can keep track of what runes are on cooldown from the corner of your eye. If you wish, you can even fade the runes and the blade in and out of combat. Having large and prominent runes and a cooldown timer on them that you can view without really looking away from the fight at hand, can mean the difference between life and death in an intense battle.

**Quartz
**While it’s one of the most universally loved mods out there, Quartz is especially useful for Death Knights. This one tells you all you need to know about, what you’re casting, what the mob you’ve targeted is casting, what role your latency plays in the cast timing, what spell can be interrupted, who interrupted the spell that’s being cast, what debuffs are on you, what debuffs you’ve placed on your mobs, and many other such things. The best part is that it utilizes some really basic casting bars to display all the info I’ve mention above, making it a rather clutter free mod to have around for those who love add-ons.
Another great feature is a swing timer bar at the bottom of the screen - this one’s especially useful for 2-handed weapon users, since they show you when your swing’s going to land so that you can plan your melee abilities accordingly (rune strike for instance, which only activates on the next swing). Also, since its very easy to interrupt spell casts using a Death Knight (gotta love Mind Freeze!), the prominent enemy cast bar helps tremendously!
Omen
Since it’s the newest class on the block, Death Knights aren’t completely balanced when it comes to threat generation. I’ve seen way too many DPS Death Knights pull aggro off the main tank, and I’ve seen way too many DK tanks lose aggro off mobs.
To keep the amount of threat generated in check, I recommend that every DK out there - tank or damage dealer, should get themselves Omen to ensure that they do their job effectively, and without disrupting the raid/party. To do so, Omen gives you a rather easy to configure interface with horizontal bars denoting the threat level and percentage of each party member.
OmniCC
This baby helps you keep track of the cooldown of all your abilities. I don’t need to tell you how important both - individual and global cooldowns are to Death Knights, considering the fact that tanking (especially) depends heavily on active abilities rather than passive ones. Knowing how long you have left on your Iceblood Fortitude or Bone Armor/Unbreakable Armor can mean the difference between being squishy, or being a juggernaut that can absorb a world of hurt without making the healer panic.
Also, knowing how long you have left on your runes to cooldown is a blessing, since you can plan your rotations accordingly and ensure that you don’t have to spam keys while you wait for your runes to cooldown. So do yourself and your keyboard a favor (no more key spamming!) and get yourself OmniCC to keep track of cooldowns.
