13-inch Retina MacBook Pro may launch on September 12

Ever since Apple announced the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, there has been a lot of speculation surrounding a 13-inch variant of the notebook. If a report by PopHerald is to be believed, then we can expect the smaller Retina display MacBook to be launched on the same date as when the iPhone 5 is announced.

The report states, “The iPhone 5 release date is reportedly scheduled by the end of September, but apart from the long-rumored smartphone and the mythical 7-inch iPad, the date might also include the launch of the smaller Retina MacBook Pro 2012 with 13-inch HD display.”

13-inch variant arriving soon

As per a report by MacRumors, the author states that a month ago, the MacBookPro10,2 was found in a Geekbench results database. This model number suggested that it could in fact be the 13-inch variant of the MacBook Pro with Retina display, as the 15-inch model that is already available in the market features the MacBookPro10,1 identifier.

The report goes on to state that a few days back another entry featuring the MacBookPro10,2 identifier has surfaced in the results database. There are a lot of resemblances between the two entries, but the second one features some minor changes.

The report states, “Like the machine that appeared first, the new machine runs a 2.9 GHz Core i7-3520M, the same processor found in the current high-end model of the non-Retina 13-inch MacBook Pro. The machine’s motherboard identifier also matches the previous machine, which itself matched a previously unaccounted for identifier seen in early developer builds of OS X Mountain Lion. And as would be expected for machines running the same specs, the two machines have very similar Geekbench scores of roughly 7800.”

Pointing out the differences between the two entries, the report states, “There are a few differences, however, with one of the key ones being a custom 12A2066 build of the unreleased OS X 10.8.1. Just two days ago, Apple gave the first indication that it will begin seeding OS X 10.8.1 to developers, but it has yet to do so. In addition, the four-digit build number suffix is sometimes used internally by Apple on its test machines, although such four-digit build numbers are sometimes also used publicly for special builds such as the version of OS X 10.7.4 that shipped on new 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro models.”

Apart from this, they state that the latest MacBookPro10,2 identifier features 8GB of RAM, which is the same that was found on the non-Retina MacBook Pro featuring the Core i7-3520M processor. The website states, “Finally, the BIOS string for the new entry appears to show an updated date code of July 18, 2012, compared to the previous one registering as June 11, 2012.”

The report ends by stating that Geekbench has displayed future MacBook models on several occasions and they point out the most recent of which is the non-Retina display version of the 15-inch MacBook Pro which was announced at this year’s WWDC event.
