1,000 to go jobless at Nokia's Salo, Finland plant

Adding to the string of job cuts across several of its global units, since last year, Nokia confirms a slew of job cuts at its Salo plant, Finland. Confirming the news in a report, Nokia states that they have concluded talks with their staff at the Salo plant about the proposed job cuts, and now planned layoffs will begin across the plant. Nokia’s been looking at ways to cut costs, which it has been incurring out of manufacturing and plans to move the entire smartphone production unit to Asia, which is the Finnish company’s biggest market. The plant at Salo, reportedly is the last large cell phone manufacturing plant in Western Europe. The remaining workforce at the plant, according to the report will “focus on tailoring models for European operators.”

The (job)hunt begins…

Massive plans!

In one of our earlier reports, we had highlighted the fact that because Nokia planned to move the entire smartphone manufacturing assembly to Asia, it would slice off as many as 4,000 jobs across Hungary, Mexico and Finland. The 1,000 job cuts that are to happen in the Salo plant in Finland, reportedly, will happen gradually through this year. Most of these, however, will take place by the end of June. Nokia has been concentrating real hard in recent times to up its game in the smartphone market, since it has been increasingly facing the heat from makers like, Apple Inc. whose presence has been intensifying the competition in the market. Ever since, new chief executive, Stephen Elop took over the reigns of the company, and its crucial deal with Microsoft came through, Nokia has been looking at better utilizing their resources to be in a better position to flex muscles in the market. Almost a year ago, Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Elop had announced that the company would be downsizing their workforce, by cutting off some 14,500 jobs.
