Samsung has confirmed that it has sold over 10 million Galaxy devices in India since the first device, i.e. Galaxy S launched in June 2010. Samsung VP (Mobile) Asim Warsi was quoted as saying, _“Innovative devices like the Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy SII and SIII, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy Y have caught the imagination of customers and helped us democratise the smartphone experience in the Indian market. This has helped Samsung sell more than 10 million Galaxy devices in the Indian market since June 2010, when the first Galaxy device was launc_hed.”
Interestingly, while Samsung refused to divulge details on the individual contribution of a particular Galaxy device, Galaxy Y series, Note series and the S III have been cited as the ones to have contributed to more than 50 percent of the sales. Warsi went on to add, “Through our series of consistent Smartphone launches, Samsung has fuelled the growth of the smartphone market in India and has been a category leader since last year. Samsung’s portfolio of 13 Galaxy devices in the Indian market are priced between Rs 6,790 to Rs 39,990."
Galaxy Y series, Note series and Galaxy S III seen as key contributors
As per figures provided by iSuppli Mobile and Wireless Communications Service recently, Samsung is set to claim the top rank in the mobile handset market at the end of 2012, dethroning Nokia in the process, who has been undefeated for the last 14 years. The South Korean giant is expected to account for 29 percent of the global cellphone shipments, an increase from 24 percent in 2011. Nokia, on the other hand, will see its market share drop to 24 percent, a dip from its previous share of 30 percent in 2011.
As for smartphone-wise performance, the South Korean giant is projected to do the best among the Top 5 Smartphone Brands in the running year. Samsung’s share in global smartphone shipments is expected to rise 8 points to 28 percent – up for 20 percent last year. Nokia, on the other hand, is expected to meet its steepest fall, with its shares being expected to fall by 11 points to 5 percent in 2012 – a drop from 16 percent in 2011.
Just this morning, there were reports about Samsung Electronics aiming to set a new record next year by shipping 500 million handsets in 2013. Out of this, 350 million units will be smartphones, stated the report by Digitimes citing industry sources who have acess to an internal estimate by Samsung.
The report also stated that with global smartphone shipments expected to touch 860 to 900 million units in 2013, Samsung aims to have 40 percent smartphone units that account for the global smartphone market share.
Other smartphone manufacturers such as Sony Mobile Communications, Lenovo, Huawei Device and ZTE have also adopted a policy of launching a variety of models that will prolong market growth. However, Sony Mobile and Lenovo have failed to roll out any flagship smartphone that can extend the life cycle of its devices, adds the report.
