10 million Galaxy S III handsets sold globally so far

The global sales of the Galaxy S III, Samsung’s newest entrant in the smartphone space have hit the 10 million mark, as per a statement by Shin Jong-kyun, the president of the company’s information technology and mobile communication division, reports Yonhap news agency. The news comes just a couple of months after the official launch of  the highly anticipated smartphone. Successor to the company’s popular Galaxy S II smartphone, the S III was expected to hit the number in July, according to a report published in late June. The report added that before the S III’s launch, Samsung had announced that it had already received 9 million pre-orders. Samsung further added that that the phone has been received well across the world. Reaching the 10 million mark just two months into sales means that about 190,000 Galaxy S III handsets are being sold every day. These numbers take the S III ahead of its very popular predecessor the Galaxy S II that reported sales hitting 10 million, five months after it reached consumers.

Later this year, Samsung has plans of introducing a 64GB variety of the handset. In its statement, Samsung added, “The 64GB model of the GALAXY S III will be available during the second half of this year. The market availability and timing may vary and will be determined at the time of release.”

All eyes are now also on what Cupertino-based company, Apple will do with its iPhone 5, which is also expected to come around soon. In his statement which created quite a stir, Terry Gou, CEO of Hon Hai Precision Industry or Foxconn (the company that builds iPhones) stated that consumers should wait for the launch of Apple’s iPhone 5, and that the newest ‘i’ devices will put Samsung’s Galaxy III to shame. The truth will be only ascertained once the iPhone 5 actually launches. Till then, folks at Samsung can rejoice.
