Nexus 7 sales are higher than estimated

After the third quarter earnings conference held on Tuesday, Asustek chief financial officer David Chang told The Wall Street Journal, “At the beginning, it was, for instance, 500K units a month, then maybe 600, 700K. This latest month, it was close to 1 million.”

A recent report stated that in a research note, Piper Jaffray’s analyst Gene Munster stated, “We believe Google’s Other Income of $666 (compared to Street at $477) suggests that Google likely sold 800k-1m Nexus 7s in Q3. Excluding our estimated Nexus 7 impact, core net revenues would have been up 2.5 percent q/q vs. 4.7 percent”

In what may come as a bigger push for the Asus-manufactured Nexus 7, the brand along with Google, has recently released a new Nexus 7. The most important feature of the revised model of the Nexus 7 is its HSPA+ connectivity. The new Nexus 7 will be available in 16GB and 32GB capacities. The 16GB version will cost $199, which converts to roughly Rs 10,761. The 32GB version will cost $249, approximately Rs 13,465. The HSPA+ enabled Nexus 7 will be able to operate on more than 200 GSM providers around the world.

First announced at the Google I/O 2012 event, the Google Nexus 7 tablet is not just designed to take on Apple’s highly successful iPad, but will also pose a stiff threat to the Amazon Kindle Fire. Google aims to tackle the competition better with its pricing strategy of this Asus-manufactured tablet.

The Google Nexus 7 tablet was initially available in two storage capacities, which are 8GB and 16GB, and the brand has priced them extremely competitively at $199 and $249 respectively. However, Google has recently scrapped the 8GB version and is now pricing the 16GB variant at $199. Google has added a lot of high-end hardware to the mix, and has kept the price down to a minimum by pricing it at $199 for the base model.

The Google Nexus 7 is available in India on a couple of retail websites. We had earlier reported that Indiatimes Shopping had the tablet in stock, and had priced it at Rs 16,952. EMI options were available as well.

The 7-inch tablet measures 198.5 x 120 x 10.5mm, and weighs 340 grams. These dimensions allow it to go head-to-head with the Amazon Kindle Fire.
