Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta Platforms Inc., has formed a new team called the Meta Advisory Group. This group will regularly meet with Meta’s leadership to provide advice on the company’s advancements in artificial intelligence and technology.

The Meta Advisory Group consists of four notable figures: Patrick Collison, the CEO and co-founder of Stripe Inc.; Nat Friedman, the former CEO of GitHub; Tobi Lutke, CEO of Shopify Inc.; and Charlie Songhurst, an investor and former executive at Microsoft Corp. They won’t be receiving any payment for their contributions, as confirmed by a Meta spokesperson.

Zuckerberg expressed his gratitude towards this group, highlighting their expertise and achievements. He sees their input as crucial, especially now as Meta explores new opportunities with AI and the metaverse.

While Meta already has an 11-person board of directors, the Meta Advisory Group serves a different purpose. Unlike the board members who are elected by shareholders and have fiduciary responsibilities, the advisory group focuses solely on providing insights and recommendations regarding technological advancements, innovation, and strategic growth opportunities.

The creation of this advisory group aligns with Meta’s intensified focus on AI-driven products, including both hardware like virtual reality headsets and smart glasses, and software such as Meta’s AI assistant available across its apps.

During Meta’s recent earnings call, Zuckerberg emphasised the company’s increased investment in AI development, expressing optimism about its potential. He acknowledged the necessity of patience from investors, as the outcomes of many AI endeavours may not yield immediate financial returns.

In the competitive landscape of AI development, Meta faces formidable rivals like Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic. Despite the challenges, Zuckerberg remains confident in Meta’s ability to lead in AI innovation.

While the frequency of the advisory group’s meetings remains unspecified, Zuckerberg indicated that they would convene periodically to advise Meta’s management team in navigating the evolving AI landscape.
