India’s iPhone production has hit a remarkable milestone, surpassing $10 billion (roughly  Rs84,000 crore) in freight-on-board (FoB) value between April and October of FY25, according to IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

This represents a 37 per cent growth compared to the same period in FY24, a success largely attributed to the Indian government’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. A significant portion of the iPhones manufactured in India were exported, with a smaller share meeting domestic demand.

Record growth in iPhone production

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Vaishnaw highlighted a report by Business Insider that detailed Apple’s growing production efforts in India. Factoring in sales, distribution, marketing, and logistics, the $10 billion FoB production value translates to approximately $15 billion (roughly Rs 1,00,000 crore). Of this, iPhones worth about $7 billion (Rs 59,000 crore) were exported to international markets.

October marked a particularly significant month, with Apple achieving $2 billion (Rs 16,000 crore) in production value in just 30 days — a milestone for the company’s Indian operations. The growth underscores Apple’s increasing reliance on India as a manufacturing hub, thanks to supportive government policies and expanding infrastructure.

Foxconn, Tata, and Pegatron Drive India’s iPhone Manufacturing

The success of iPhone production in India is driven by key players, with Foxconn leading the charge, accounting for 56 per cent of Apple’s manufacturing capacity in the country. Tata Group has emerged as a critical partner following its acquisition of Wistron’s plant, contributing 30 per cent of production.

Pegatron, another Taiwanese manufacturer, rounds out the trio with a 14 per cent share.

This surge in manufacturing has also had a profound impact on job creation. Over the past four years, Apple’s production efforts in India have generated approximately 1,75,000 jobs, with more than 72 per cent of these positions held by women, reflecting the company’s commitment to empowering diverse workforces.

Ambitious Targets for Future Growth

Apple’s expansion in India shows no signs of slowing down. The company aims to achieve $18 billion (roughly Rs 1,50,000 crore) in FoB value by the end of FY25, which could translate into a total production value exceeding $25 billion (Rs 2,10,000 crore).

The PLI scheme continues to play a pivotal role in attracting global tech giants like Apple to India, bolstering the country’s position as a key player in the global electronics manufacturing ecosystem. As Apple’s footprint in India grows, the milestone reinforces the country’s potential to become a major hub for high-tech production.
