Is it iPhone 18 Pro or not? This is the first question that comes to mind when we hear a new iPhone leak. But we do not know that yet. However, the rumour has it that Apple could be gearing up for a major leap in smartphone photography.
Reports now suggest that a 200-megapixel camera, long rumoured for future iPhones, may arrive earlier than previously expected. While earlier timelines pointed to a 2027 or even 2028 debut, new information indicates the upgrade could land as soon as next year’s lineup.
The development marks a significant shift for Apple, which has traditionally prioritised image quality over sheer megapixel count. But if the rumours hold true, the company may finally be ready to join the high-resolution race, on its own terms.
A shift in Apple’s camera strategy
The idea of a 200MP iPhone camera isn’t entirely new. Back in May last year, Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station claimed that Apple was working on such a sensor for a future device. The claim was later supported by Morgan Stanley, which suggested a 2028 launch window.
That would mark a considerable jump from the 48MP sensors currently used in models like the iPhone 17 Pro. For years, Apple deliberately stayed away from the megapixel race, sticking with 12MP sensors while competitors pushed higher numbers.
This approach helped iPhones build a strong reputation for low-light photography, an area where higher megapixel counts can sometimes struggle.
Apple only relatively recently made the move to 48MP, signalling a gradual shift in its camera philosophy.
Bigger sensor could solve old problems
One of the main concerns with increasing megapixel counts is pixel density. Packing more pixels into the same sensor size can introduce noise, particularly in low-light conditions. This has historically been a key trade-off in smartphone photography.
However, the latest report from Digital Chat Station suggests Apple may be addressing this issue by pairing the 200MP camera with a larger sensor. The leak points to a 1/1.12-inch sensor, similar to the one expected on the Oppo Find X9 Ultra.

View AllA larger sensor allows more light to be captured, which can significantly improve image quality and reduce noise. This is one reason why dedicated cameras still outperform most smartphones.
If Apple adopts this approach, the 200MP sensor could be reserved for the telephoto lens rather than the main camera. This would allow for more detailed zoom shots without compromising overall image performance.
Interestingly, the same report suggests that Apple is testing this hardware for a much earlier release than previously thought. While nothing is confirmed, the possibility of a 200MP iPhone arriving sooner adds a new layer of intrigue to Apple’s upcoming launches.
