India’s pioneering solar observatory mission, Aditya-L1, is on the verge of reaching its destination at Lagrange Point 1 (L1) in the first week of January 2024, according to Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh. Launched in February 2023, the satellite has travlled approximately 1.5 million km from Earth, with its imminent arrival at L1 marking a significant milestone in solar research. Aditya-L1 has recently achieved a remarkable feat by capturing comprehensive images of the Sun using the Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT) integrated into the mission. The images were obtained within the 200-400 nm wavelength range, allowing scientists to explore the Sun’s photosphere and chromosphere with unprecedented detail. SUIT utilizes scientific filters to precisely capture distinct features of the Sun, including sunspots, plage, and serene regions, providing groundbreaking insights into the intricate dynamics of the magnetized solar atmosphere. The observations made by Aditya-L1 are expected to enhance our understanding of the dynamic interactions within the solar atmosphere and provide precise constraints on the influence of solar radiation on Earth’s climate. The mission’s strategic position at L1 allows for optimal observations of the Sun, making it a vital asset in advancing solar research. Simultaneously, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is actively preparing for critical tests associated with the Gaganyaan human spaceflight program. These tests involve evaluations of the crew module and abort system, crucial steps preceding the planned orbital test flight in 2024. The Gaganyaan mission aims to send Indian astronauts into space in 2025, contingent upon the successful completion of milestones in the coming stages. (With inputs from agencies)
