Earlier this month Google re-branded it’s Android app download store, Market as Google Play. The new service brought together, music, movies and books under a new name in an effort to spruce up the shopping experience. Now Play has been added to the top of Google browser bar. That’s right Google Play will now appear on all Google products that you use, from Gmail to Google News. For Google search engine users Play today appeared right on top with NEW written in red right next to it. What does this move mean? For starters it’s free promotion for Android and apps that are available on Google. [caption id=“attachment_256656” align=“alignleft” width=“380” caption=“Play is part of the Google Toolbar now. Screengrab. “] [/caption] So why is Google promoting Play so aggressively? Perhaps the first reason is that despite the growing popularity of Android phones, it can’t be denied that, Apple’s AppStore still has the best apps. Google’s Play when compared to Apple’s AppStore is clearly a distant second. The other reason could be that with Nokia and Microsoft setting up an App Campus , to create better apps, means that Google can’t afford to lose to an upstart. Should Google fear losing to Nokia and Microsoft? For now, not really. The success of Nokia or Windows Phone apps depends pretty much on the success of Windows Smartphones, which is yet too be seen. For now it’s best to see this move as an aggressive promotion. Google is going all out to use all it’s power to promote it’s app store. Why wouldn’t it, since the future of the computing lies in apps?
