Google Maps gets a massive overhaul for Indian users, adds tons of new features

During its ‘Building for India’ event in New Delhi, Google has announced a series of regional enhancements for Google Maps. The search engine giant aims to improve the user experience for Indian customers by introducing features such as Live View walking, Lens in Maps, and more. The updates also include improvements for train travel and public transport, with the Where Is My Train feature adding support for Mumbai and Kolkata local trains. The rollout of these new Google Maps features will initially be on Android, with an iOS release expected in the coming months. Google showcased India-specific features at the Building for India event, including Live View walking, Lens in Maps, fuel-efficient routing, address descriptors, and local trains support. The company’s goal is to create a more visually immersive and comprehensive map for India, addressing the diverse mobility needs of the country. Live View walking navigation will be available in 3,000 cities across India, starting with Android devices and iOS support arriving later. The Lens in Maps feature, which incorporates Google Lens support for using the phone camera for local information, is set to be implemented by January 2024. Fuel-efficient routing, designed to offer eco-friendly route options, will distinguish itself with a green leaf symbol on Google Maps, starting January 2024. This feature will initially be available in over 20 cities. The Where Is My Train feature, enabling live tracking of trains, will soon support Mumbai local trains, with Kolkata local trains to follow. Address descriptors are expected to be integrated into Maps in early 2024. Google’s commitment to enhancing the Indian Maps experience aligns with its broader strategy of tailoring services to the unique requirements of specific regions. The company previously introduced “Immersive View for routes” and other AI features to Google Maps in October, offering users step-by-step previews of their routes while driving, walking, or cycling in select cities worldwide.
