At an investment meet revealing the financial reports of 2015-16, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot discussed with investors his expectations of what will happen to the console space over the next two iterations.
Guillemot sees a gradual phasing out of current gaming consoles that use physical media, before the consoles move to the cloud to deliver interactive content. At the present, the bandwidth available cannot support heavy interactive multimedia content, but in the generation after the next, a console could be reduced to a screen and a controller. Instead of a box, the consoles of the future could arrive on a chip.
Guillemot stated clearly, that the future as seen by the company was in streaming titles. However, he guessed that there was time for console manufacturers to come up with one more iteration of present generation consoles, before the transition to completely streamed gaming content happens. Guillemot was quizzed about mid cycle hardware upgrades, like the PlayStation 4.5. Guillemot replied that Ubisoft will not be changing their approach based on rumours. The transition between consoles has been smooth so far, so no special effort from Ubisoft’s side is mandated anyway.
What do you think? Do you think traditional consoles will be replaced by a new generation of consoles that are reduced to a chip, a monitor, and mostly streaming services? Do let us know in the comments section below.
