There are a great many highly anticipated games coming out this year, but for Sony fans, none more so than The Last Guardian. The game has been promised since 2007 and even now, more than a decade later, we’re yet to see any signs of life. Until now.
Fumito Ueda, the designer and mind behind The Last Guardian told EDGE that the game will definitely hit the Sony PlayStation 4 by the end of this year. Ueda’s earlier works, Shadow of the Colossus and Ico are considered by many to be milestones in gaming and the hype behind The Last Guardian is understandable. It’s hard to really put your finger on exactly what it is that makes Ueda’s games special. But largely, it’s down to the atmosphere.
His games are defined by a sense of scale and adventure. He brings abandoned worlds to life with a subtle flair, a sense of desperation with a change in tone. Ueda’s skill doesn’t just extend to atmosphere though. A sense of affection between man and beast, loyalty, melancholy, somehow, these are all beautifully conveyed in his games. Ueda really is the master of atmosphere.
The Last Guardian encapsulates all of the above and then some. The brief glimpse we got of the game at E3 last year was enough to convince us that The Last Guardian has lost none of that charm. It’s no wonder fans are desperate.
If you don’t have a PS4 already, The Last Guardian might be reason enough.
