The Game Quantum is an offline and online turn based strategy title, developed by the Indian studio Pixel Drop. The game is about saving quantum space, which is the game board, those familiar with the viral mobile gaming sensation Chain Reaction will instantly understand the underlying idea, but the game is far more than that. The number of turns each cell can hold has been increased, this might seem excessive or unnecessary at first, but this small addition instantly opens up a lot more room for strategic gameplay. It also increases the game duration, by a considerable factor. This also reduces the extent to which a cascading chain reaction can reach, because of the additional state available in every cell. The visuals are minimal, in tune with the design philosophy of Apple devices. There is a default teal/purple colour combination that inverts automatically from a bright background to a dark background according to the time of the day. There are 8 colour options available, these swatches are refreshing and stylish. Each set is called a “Lab Coat” and can be selected by swiping through the options at the time of launching a game mode. The day/night theme can be toggled in settings. There is a bar on top that shows how much of the quantum space each player controls. Each cell contains a nucleus orbitted by electrons, which gives a dynamic game board with lots of eye catching movements instead of a static game board. Towards the end of the game, all the electrons flying around can get chaotic.
There are two modes, Nuclear Stroll and Atomic Rush. Nuclear Stroll is the local pass n play multiplayer mode. Atomic Rush is online multiplayer, and works through Game Center. It was very fast and snappy, you will not even notice that the other person is not physically in the room. You can however, take your time with it, and think out a strategy, calculate carefully the consequences of an action, and then take a turn as and when you please. Up to eight simultaneous games possible at a time. The IAP is geared entirely towards the multiplayer gameplay, and since opportunities for playing this mode is sparse before the game is launched, we asked the Co-Founder of Pixel Drop, Pratik Luharuka to explain the in game store. “The store is specifically designed for the online version (Atomic Rush) where you can exchange or buy inventory i.e electrons, nuclei, Duality power up and Shield. The store is designed in such a way that if you play your moves right and maintain a good winning streak you would never have to spend a single penny to buy any inventory. That is where the competitive edge comes, players will have to strategize and carefully deploy electrons so as to not loose inventory too fast,” he said. There are also small, considerate touches. The game pulls in your name from the game center, and picks only the first two letters of your name to generate an element symbol just for you. Your in game avatar makes it look like you belong somewhere in the periodic table. The game is a celebration of quantum physicists who improved our understanding of the world we live in. As and when you unlock the achievements, you also unlock a scientist. The game introduces you to more and more scientists as you play through. If you appreciate physics, you will love these comics that are being posted on The Game Quantum website. The game will release on 23 April on the App Store.
