PAX East 2016: Outlast 2 is set to be as terrifying as the the original

Outlast is an indie horror game that came out of nowhere and scared the living daylights out of just about anyone who played the game. The sequel, Outlast 2, as demoed at PAX East 2016, was no less terrifying.

Show of hands, how many of you have played Outlast? That's not a lot of hands, is it? Outlast is an indie horror game that came out of nowhere and scared the living daylights out of just about anyone who played the game. The sequel, Outlast 2, as demoed at PAX East 2016, was no less terrifying.

If you've enjoyed movies like Wrong Turn or the Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original)—campy as they may be—you'll love Outlast. The original game was set in a hospital building and your trusty, night-vision equipped handycam was your only source of vision in the darker areas. Outlast 2 seems to carry forward the latter mechanic, but takes you out of the hospital and places you right in the middle of the American Southwest, redneck country if you will.

The demo at PAX featured you, a hapless journalist, making your way through a small town, surrounded by death and decay on all sides. The atmosphere is built to perfection, there's a distinct sense of foreboding and terror that builds up as the demo progresses. We won't spoil the demo by writing a description here, but head over to Gamespot and check out the full demo here. Headphones are highly recommended. A dark room too.

Outlast 2 looks to be as terrifying as the original and we can't wait to scare ourselves silly. The game should hit stores sometime in late 2016.
