PAX East 2016: 'Orcs aren't evil' says Warcraft director, Duncan Jones

Duncan Jones reveals that Sam Raimi left the Warcraft movie team because of a "fundamental" problem with the portrayal of orcs.

Sam Raimi, the man who directed the Spider-Man series (the first three movies) was originally slated to take over directorial duties for the upcoming Warcraft movie. He later left to work on Oz: The Great and Powerful and Blizzard handed the mantle to Duncan Jones, who's worked on such notable titles as Moon and Source Code. Blizzard are the original developers behind the Warcraft franchise.

At a panel in PAX East 2016, Duncan Jones revealed that the primary reason for Sam Raimi's departure was a "fundamental" problem with the direction that Raimi intended to take, reports Gamespot.

Apparently, Raimi's vision involved "good" humans and "bad" orcs and, as any Warcraft veteran will tell you, that's just not the case. Blizzard was unhappy with that storyline and Jones, a Warcraft fan himself, managed to get his hands on the script, instantly spotting the problem. Or so he says.

Jones then reworked the script and pitched his idea to Blizzard, which was favourably received. Coming from a fan, we expect it would.

Warcraft is expected to hit theatres on June 10.
