Pokémon Go servers were down on Sunday, and players could not connect to the servers to play. Hacking collective OurMine claimed that they initiated a dedicated denial of service attack against the Pokémon Go servers. A dedicated denial of service attack compromises the server by sending a series of rapid requests, that prevents legitimate users from accessing the service. OurMine demanded that the staff manning the servers contact the group to protect the servers. OurMine first posted on it’s website that it would attack the Pokémon Go servers for three to four hours, and that no one would be able to play the game during that time. The login servers were targeted for the attack. “Today We will attack “Pokemon Go” Login Servers! so no one will be able to play this game till Pokemon Go contact us on our website to teach them how to protect it!” read an announcement on the OurMine web page. OurMine claims that their hacking activities are aimed at increasing the awareness about information security. By going after a series of high profile targets, OurMine is making the statement that no one or nothing is safe enough. OurMine also offers security services to paying clients. Previously, OurMine has compromised social media accounts of Google CEO Sundar Pichai , Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg , former Twitter CEO Dick Costolo and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey .
