GameFront to shut shop on 30 April

GameFront is a hosting service for videogame user created content. The site has been running in one form or another since 2001, and has aggregated a large collections of mods, patches, add-ons and skins for classic PC titles such as GTA IV, Counter Strike, Half Life 2, Doom 3, Homeworld 2 and Call of Duty 2. The site announced plans to shut down services on April 30. “We are sorry to announce that GameFront will be closing its doors permanently as of April 30, 2016. Since our founding as FileLeech almost 20 years ago, we have always strived to offer the best file hosting alongside quality gaming content. To all of our fans who have supported us throughout the years, we thank you for making us your destination for gaming files. Despite name changes, ownership changes, and staff changes, you have always made our jobs rewarding and fun.” This is a piece of gaming history, although now there are better featured services for user created content, Steam Workshop being particularly popular with both developers and gamers. Those who want to download the mods for the classic titles, have till April 30 of this month to do so. ModDB, another site for cataloging and hosting user generated content, has reached out to GameFront to possibly take over the library and hosting.
