Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is taking a major leap forward in tech by developing a custom AI chatbot, known as GSAi, for the US General Services Administration (GSA). This initiative, part of President Trump’s AI-driven agenda, aims to streamline operations in the federal government.

As per a report by the Wired, GSAi is designed to improve productivity for over 12,000 employees who manage office spaces, contracts, and IT services, while also providing tools to analyse procurement and contract data.

The project, which hasn’t been widely publicised, reflects Trump’s ambition to make the US a global leader in AI. Musk’s team has been moving quickly on this initiative, amid contrasting approaches between his administration and the AI caution exercised during President Biden’s term.

Speedy tech solutions for GSA employees

The plan for GSAi isn’t only about flashy AI tools but has a practical focus on helping government employees work smarter. Tasks like drafting memos and running data analysis on contracts could become easier with the AI system. Musk’s team reportedly considered partnering with Google to use their Gemini AI but ultimately decided to build the tech from scratch to meet specific requirements.

Technology head Thomas Shedd hinted that centralising and analysing contracts was a key goal of this AI initiative. The government had been cautious about generative AI tools, like ChatGPT and Gemini, during the previous administration, but Musk’s team is now accelerating AI integration with few restrictions.

AI amidst political shake-ups

The Trump administration’s AI drive is part of a broader and controversial overhaul of federal bureaucracy. Critics, including Democrats, unions, and civil rights groups, argue that these rapid changes may even push legal boundaries.

Some AI projects have already faced setbacks, with at least one rollout quietly paused. Despite this, Musk’s team continues to push forward, focusing on AI that could reduce errors and improve efficiency across government departments. Reports suggest AI tools are already being tested in areas like education, where spending and programs are under analysis.

The shift is part of a larger drive by the Office of Personnel Management, which is urging a return to in-office work and promoting a culture of excellence, often led by Musk loyalists. AI coding tools are also gaining traction, with systems like Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot being considered after an earlier interest in another AI tool called Cursor stalled.

The race to modernise US govt with AI

AI adoption in the US government isn’t entirely new. Under President Biden, agencies explored tools such as GitHub Copilot and Google’s Gemini but faced delays due to security review requirements. Government guidelines previously emphasised balancing AI efficiency with risks like cybersecurity vulnerabilities and errors. However, bureaucratic hurdles and the lengthy approval process slowed progress, leaving many AI initiatives stuck in the pipeline.

Despite these challenges, Musk’s DOGE team is rapidly expanding AI’s footprint in federal operations. The switch to in-house AI systems like GSAi is seen as a strategic move to overcome vendor limitations and streamline tech adoption. While smaller startups like Anysphere, the maker of Cursor, have struggled to meet strict security authorisations, major tech players like Microsoft have continued to dominate government software spending.

With these efforts underway, the federal government seems poised for an AI-fuelled transformation, though whether it leads to sustainable improvements or sparks further political tensions remains to be seen. The White House and involved companies have yet to provide further details on the ongoing developments.
