Elon Musk has unveiled plans to develop a groundbreaking supercomputer, and has named it the “gigafactory of compute.” The new supercomputer will be deployed solely to support the development of his AI startup, xAI.

According to reports from The Information and Reuters, Musk plans for this supercomputer to be an unparalleled powerhouse in AI processing, and to have the largest cluster of NVIDIA H100 GPUs ever assembled. xAI will apparently work with Oracle to set up the supercomputer.

During a recent presentation to investors, Musk outlined his vision for the supercomputer, stating that it would surpass existing GPU clusters in size by at least fourfold.

The scale of Musk’s vision is truly staggering. The billionaire is aiming to integrate over 100,000 NVIDIA H100 chips into the supercomputer. This colossal computing infrastructure is set to propel xAI’s research and development efforts to new heights and will enable xAI to train complex AI models like Grok 3 and beyond.

When he unveiled Grok 2 earlier this year, Musk had revealed that it was trained over a cluster of 20,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs.

Not just the magnitude, but even the timeline for Musk’s ambitious plans is staggering. xAI aims to complete the supercomputer by fall of 2025 and has personally committed to ensuring its timely delivery.

Once operational, the interconnected clusters of NVIDIA’s flagship H100 GPUs will represent a quantum leap in computational power, and revolutionise AI research and development.

The NVIDIA H100 GPUs are renowned for their unparalleled performance in handling AI workloads. They currently dominate the data centre chip market. However, their high demand often makes them a nightmare to acquire, with startups, established tech companies and even governments vying for H100 GPUs. Naturally, it will be a task for Musk and his associates to set the supercomputer up, even if they have the money.

Musk’s foray into AI with xAI has been a major challenge to established players in the field, such as OpenAI, Google, and Meta. xAI’s flagship project, Grok, is a cutting-edge chatbot designed to access real-time data from social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter and owned by Musk himself.

Musk’s involvement in the AI space dates back to his co-founding of OpenAI in 2015, although he later distanced himself from the organization, citing concerns about its profit-driven direction under new leadership. This move reflects Musk’s commitment to advancing AI research while adhering to his principles of ethical and equitable AI development.

Despite legal disputes with OpenAI and allegations of sour grapes, Musk remains undeterred in his quest to push the boundaries of AI innovation. With the forthcoming supercomputer, xAI is poised to make significant strides in AI research and development, cementing Musk’s legacy as a pioneering figure in the field of artificial intelligence.
