Elon Musk reveals the guiding principle for xAI’s Grok chatbot, how it comes up with witty responses

Grok, the AI chatbot launched by Elon Musk’s xAI has become a massive hit online all thanks to the witty and rather quirky responses that the AI chatbot has been giving to its users.

For Grok, Musk had one clear objective — to make a chatbot that always ‘tells the truth’, one that cannot be manipulated into giving a biased answer, and most importantly, that it will be funny.

Elon Musk took to X and posted what was the guiding principle of his AI bot Grok, which shaped its character and personality. “Grok’s personality is modelled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy with a heart of gold,” said Musk.

Musk’s love for Douglas Adams’ classic
Musk has been a massive fan of Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and has included the book in a list of 12 books that changed his life.

In an interview, Musk explained why, he loved the book so much and still picks it up from time to time. “I guess when I was around 12 or 15 … I had an existential crisis, and I was reading various books on trying to figure out the meaning of life and what does it all mean. It all seemed quite meaningless and then we happened to have some books by Nietzsche and Schopenhauer in the house, which you should not read at age 14 (laughter). It is bad, it’s really negative. So then I read Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy which is quite positive I think and it highlighted an important point which is that a lot of times the question is harder than the answer,” Musk explained.

He added, “And if you can properly phrase the question, then the answer is the easy part. So, to the degree that we can better understand the universe, then we can better know what questions to ask. Then whatever the question is that most approximates: what’s the meaning of life? That’s the question we can ultimately get closer to understanding.”
