Marius Nilsen, a member of parliament from Norway, has put forth a proposal to award the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize to Elon Musk, as reported by Politico. Nilsen contends that Musk’s recent endeavours, particularly his acquisition of Twitter and provision of satellite communications to the Ukrainian military, underscore his commitment to fostering free speech and global connectivity.
Nilsen, representing the Progress Party, emphasized Musk’s advocacy for open dialogue and expression of diverse viewpoints in an increasingly polarized world. He highlighted Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, now rebranded as X, and his subsequent actions to combat censorship and promote free speech.
Notably, Musk reinstated numerous previously silenced accounts, including that of former US President Donald Trump, whom Twitter had censored during his tenure.
“Echo chambers and yes-people do not bring forth the best ideas and cooperation, but decline and regression. Complementary views, opinions and processes of thoughts unlocks the best ideas,” Nilsen said.
Furthermore, Nilsen lauded Musk’s role in providing satellite communications, through SpaceX’s Starlink system, to Ukraine amid tensions with Russia. He argued that these actions have contributed to global connectivity and enhanced safety, aligning with the Nobel Peace Prize’s objective of promoting peace and cooperation.
“The multitude of tech companies Musk has founded, owns or runs, aimed at bettering societies, increasing knowledge of both earth and space, in addition to enabling communication and connectivity globally… has helped make the world a more connected and safer place,” Nilsen argued in his nomination.
The proposal comes amidst a competitive field for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, with notable contenders including Julian Assange, Pope Francis, and various world leaders and NGOs. Last year’s recipient was Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi, recognized for her advocacy for women’s rights and human freedom in Iran.
