US President Donald Trump has weighed in on the rise of Chinese AI company DeepSeek, calling it both a “wake-up call” for American industries and a “positive” development for the tech sector. Speaking to Republican lawmakers at his Doral golf resort in Florida, Trump discussed his thoughts on China’s rapid advancements in artificial intelligence. He acknowledged that DeepSeek’s AI model was not only faster but also much cheaper than its US counterparts, which he believes could be a good thing for America.

Trump noted that this cost-effective innovation could be seen as a “positive” development, suggesting that the US could benefit from finding more efficient ways to develop AI. He also warned that the emergence of DeepSeek should prompt US tech companies to step up their efforts to remain competitive. “We have the greatest scientists in the world,” he said, urging American industries to focus on competing fiercely in this space. He also pledged that, under his administration, US tech companies would be given more freedom to innovate, positioning the country to lead the AI race.

Trump’s economic strategy

In addition to commenting on DeepSeek, Trump also spoke about the US semiconductor industry. He indicated that if foreign companies, including Taiwan’s TSMC, don’t start producing chips in the US, he would consider imposing tariffs on imported chips. The President’s remarks reflect ongoing concerns in the US about the nation’s reliance on foreign tech production, particularly from China and Taiwan, and his desire to bolster domestic manufacturing in these critical sectors.

Trump’s focus on increasing US competitiveness in AI and tech was a central theme of his speech. He reassured American companies that the administration would push to reduce costs while still achieving high-quality results, essentially offering a path to both technological dominance and greater economic efficiency.

US Tech stocks react to DeepSeek’s rise

Trump’s comments came on the back of a sharp decline in US tech stocks, which were impacted by DeepSeek’s success. The Chinese AI model had a major impact on the market, with its mobile app climbing to the top of Apple’s free iPhone apps list. DeepSeek’s ability to deliver high-quality AI capabilities at a fraction of the cost of US competitors raised serious concerns about the future of the US tech industry. As investors digested this news, major tech companies such as Nvidia, Google, and Microsoft saw significant losses.

The growing influence of Chinese companies in the AI space has become a contentious issue in the US, with some politicians and tech leaders viewing it as a serious challenge to American supremacy in the sector. However, Trump’s comments seem to indicate a more optimistic take on competition, viewing DeepSeek’s advancements not as a threat but as a chance for American companies to rethink their approach to AI development.

Trump’s softening stance on China?

While Trump’s remarks were generally positive, they also stand in contrast to the more aggressive rhetoric coming from other parts of his administration. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other officials have been more vocal about China’s practices, particularly when it comes to intellectual property theft. Trump, however, appeared to take a more pragmatic view, suggesting that China’s technological advancements should serve as motivation for the US to push harder in the race for AI dominance.

The mixed messages on China’s role in the global tech race reflect the broader debate within the US government about how to balance competition and cooperation with China in high-tech industries. It’s unclear which perspective will prevail in the long term, but Trump’s comments make it clear that he sees China’s progress in AI as an opportunity for the US to refocus and rise to the challenge.
