DeepSeek, one of China’s fastest-growing tech start-ups, has emerged as a dream employer for young job seekers, thanks to its rapid recruitment drive for artificial intelligence (AI) talent. Based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, with additional offices in Beijing, the company has opened dozens of positions related to artificial general intelligence (AGI) research and development, according to a report by the South China Morning Post.

AGI refers to AI systems with human-like intelligence capable of learning and adapting to tasks without prior training.

The surge in interest is largely driven by DeepSeek’s recent launch of two powerful AI models, DeepSeek-V3 and DeepSeek-R1. These models have gained international attention for achieving high performance at a fraction of the cost and computing resources used by other tech giants. The company’s chatbot, powered by the R1 model, recently topped the charts on Apple’s App Store in both China and the US, boosting its global reputation.

Competitive salaries and opportunities for young talent

DeepSeek’s aggressive recruitment campaign offers highly attractive salary packages, reflecting the intense competition for AI talent in China’s booming tech sector. For deep-learning researchers specialising in AGI, positions at DeepSeek’s Beijing office come with monthly salaries of up to 100,000 yuan (around US$13,900), even for those without prior work experience.

Engineers focusing on deep-learning systems, data research, and full-stack development are offered annual salaries ranging from 700,000 to 1.2 million yuan. These compensation packages aim to entice top graduates from elite universities like Tsinghua and Peking, many of whom already form the backbone of DeepSeek’s development team.

The company emphasises its cutting-edge infrastructure, including top-tier graphics processing units (GPUs), as a major draw for AI researchers. Additionally, DeepSeek promises more flexibility and autonomy for its employees to test innovative ideas, further enhancing its appeal to ambitious young professionals.

A tight labour market for AI talent

Despite the rapid growth of China’s AI industry, the demand for skilled professionals is far outpacing supply. Reports from platforms like Maimai and Zhilian Zhaopin highlight soaring demand for roles in natural language processing and deep learning, with growth rates of 111 per cent and 61 per cent respectively in the first half of 2024.

DeepSeek’s recruitment efforts have not gone unnoticed by government officials. Huang Kunming, the Communist Party secretary of Guangdong province, praised the company for its bold advancements in AI, stating that it has demonstrated the courage to compete with US tech giants.

Founder Liang Wenfeng has credited DeepSeek’s success to the “young geniuses” in its ranks. In a past interview, he explained that the company prioritises talent and potential over experience, making it an attractive destination for fresh graduates and early-career professionals eager to make a mark in AI. As DeepSeek continues to expand, the competition among China’s tech firms for top AI talent is expected to intensify.
