In a rare show of unity, Intel and AMD have teamed up to form an x86 advisory group to defend their shared platform against growing competition from ARM. The initiative, which includes major tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, Meta, and others, aims to revitalise the x86 architecture by promoting greater compatibility, consistency, and cross-platform integration.

As Windows on ARM continues to gain traction, the two chipmaking rivals are determined to secure the future of x86 as a dominant force in computing.

Rallying the industry to innovate
The newly formed advisory group brings together an impressive roster of industry leaders, including Microsoft, Lenovo, Dell, Red Hat, and HP, as well as figures like Epic Games’ Tim Sweeney and Linux creator Linus Torvalds.

The group’s goal is to make the x86 platform more unified by simplifying architectural guidelines and developing standard interfaces. This, they believe, will offer developers more predictability, spark innovation, and enhance the integration of new capabilities across software frameworks and operating systems.

ARM, which powers Apple’s silicon chips and Qualcomm processors, has grown in popularity due to its lightweight and adaptable design. ARM’s architecture is widely used not just in mobile devices but also in Big Tech data centres, offering significant flexibility that is difficult for x86 to match.

Commenting on the partnership, Pat Gelsinger, Intel CEO said that for the first time in decades, the industry is on the cusp of significant shifts when it comes to the x86 architecture and ecosystem and that these shifts will be driven using new levels of scalability, customisation, and compatibility all based on current as well as future needs of computer users worldwide.

He also added that Intel “proudly stands together with AMD” and the founding members of the advisory group. He further went on to highlight his appreciation for the support of several thought leaders across the tech space.

AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su, believes that by establishing the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group, they will be able to ensure that the architecture continues evolving the platform of choice for software developers and customers.

She added, that this joint exercise will ensure that the success of the x86 platform lives on, for decades to come.”

By pooling their expertise, Intel and AMD hope to counter this trend, ensuring that x86 remains relevant across sectors, including cloud computing, data centres, edge devices, and embedded systems.

Aiming for compatibility and consistency
Intel and AMD plan to drive x86’s evolution by creating unified architectural interfaces, making it easier for developers to build consistent applications across all x86-based platforms.

This collaborative effort promises to enhance customer choice and boost hardware-software compatibility, ultimately allowing users to take advantage of cutting-edge features with greater ease. The advisory group will actively gather input from the x86 development community, ensuring that future improvements align with the needs of both developers and customers.

This new partnership reflects a history of collaboration between the two chipmakers on crucial industry standards. Over the years, Intel and AMD have worked together on initiatives such as PCI, PCIe, ACPI, and USB – all key technologies that have shaped modern computing. Their latest effort aims to continue that tradition, pushing the x86 platform forward at a time when competition from ARM has become fiercer than ever.

By aligning industry giants under a shared vision, Intel and AMD are betting that a more streamlined and consistent x86 ecosystem will position the platform to thrive despite mounting challenges. As ARM’s influence grows, the advisory group’s collaborative approach could be the key to ensuring x86 remains a powerful, innovative force for years to come.
