Chinese hackers compromised at least 8 US telecoms in Salt Typhoon hacking campaign, finds White House

In a concerning revelation, the White House has confirmed that a Chinese cyber-espionage campaign, dubbed “Salt Typhoon,” successfully compromised at least eight US telecommunications carriers. This marks the first official acknowledgement of the scale of the attack, which has been unfolding for over two years. The announcement comes more than three months after initial media reports shed light on the operation, which has now been identified as a global threat.

The campaign, targeting telecom carriers in dozens of countries, reportedly accessed the phone and text communications of a select group of highly targeted individuals. While classified communications appear to be untouched, the implications of the breach remain significant, highlighting vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Salt Typhoon’s serious implications

Salt Typhoon has emerged as a major cyber-espionage operation, extending its reach far beyond the US. Anne Neuberger, deputy adviser on cybersecurity and emerging technology, revealed that telecom networks across multiple nations have fallen victim to this campaign.

Despite the scale of the intrusion, US officials maintain that its impact was limited to specific targets rather than sweeping access to classified or widespread communications. However, the operation’s longevity and sophistication underline the urgent need for improved cyber-defences in the telecom sector.

US’ efforts to counter the threat

The White House has mounted a coordinated response to tackle Salt Typhoon, including a dedicated group that meets daily to investigate and support affected networks.

The Biden administration is also exploring actions against entities that may have supported China’s cyber programme. Meanwhile, cybersecurity discussions with telecom CEOs and experts have led to calls for mandatory measures like secure network configurations and enhanced monitoring. These proactive steps aim to fortify defences against future threats.

Telecom networks struggle to regain control

Despite ongoing efforts, US telecom networks are still grappling with the challenge of ejecting Chinese operatives from their systems. Cybersecurity officials acknowledged the persistence of the intrusions, with investigations into the breaches beginning just six months ago. This prolonged access underscores the difficulty of countering advanced cyber espionage campaigns. The incoming administration will face a critical task in reinforcing cybersecurity measures and addressing the broader implications of Salt Typhoon’s global impact.

As the US continues to strengthen its response, the episode serves as a stark reminder of the ever-evolving nature of cyber threats and the need for constant vigilance.
