OpenAI has announced a significant milestone for its flagship product, ChatGPT, which now boasts over 200 million weekly active users. This marks a doubling of its user base compared to the previous year, highlighting the chatbot’s growing dominance in the rapidly expanding field of generative AI.

This surge in usage underscores ChatGPT’s position as a leader among AI chatbots, even as competition intensifies. Major tech companies like Microsoft, Google, and Meta are all vying for a share of this lucrative market, frequently rolling out updates and new features to attract users.

In addition to the impressive user numbers, OpenAI revealed that its tools are being widely adopted across the corporate world. According to the company, 92 per cent of Fortune 500 companies are now utilising its products. This widespread adoption is further reflected in the usage of OpenAI’s automated API, which has also seen a dramatic increase since the release of GPT-4o mini in July.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasised the real-world impact of these tools, noting that people are integrating them into their daily lives in meaningful ways. Whether in healthcare, education, or creative endeavours, OpenAI’s technology is helping users tackle routine tasks, solve complex problems, and unlock new levels of creativity.

Despite ChatGPT’s strong position, the competition remains fierce. Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, and Meta are all striving to capture the loyalty of users in this fast-evolving space. Meta, in particular, has reported a sharp increase in the adoption of its open-source Llama models. The company noted that usage at major cloud service providers doubled between May and July of this year following the release of Llama 3.1.

The growing adoption of generative AI across various sectors and the battle for dominance among tech giants suggest that the landscape of AI chatbots will continue to evolve rapidly. As companies push the boundaries of what these tools can do, the competition to win over users is likely to remain intense.
