Apple had declined Meta Platforms’ proposal to integrate its AI chatbot, Llama, into iPhones, months ago.

Both, Apple and Meta were engaged in brief discussions in March, but talks did not progress beyond the preliminary stage, according to a Bloomberg News report.

Sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that Apple’s decision was influenced by concerns over Meta’s privacy practices, which Apple deemed insufficient. This decision comes at a time when Apple is emphasising privacy and security as key differentiators for its products.

Around the same time as the talks with Meta, Apple was also exploring partnerships with other AI providers. The company has since moved forward with integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Alphabet’s Gemini into its products.

Apple unveiled its AI strategy at the annual developer conference in June, highlighting the incorporation of OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its devices and the integration of its new “Apple Intelligence” technology across various apps, including the virtual assistant Siri.

Apple Intelligence is set to begin testing in the summer of 2024. Although the exact start date and the details of the initial testing phases are yet to be confirmed, this initiative represents a significant step in Apple’s broader AI strategy.

By leveraging multiple AI providers, Apple aims to offer a diverse range of AI capabilities to its users while maintaining competitive costs.

Apple’s approach to engaging multiple AI providers mirrors its strategy for sourcing hardware components. By collaborating with various suppliers, Apple can ensure a wider range of options and maintain flexibility in its supply chain. This strategy allows Apple to provide its users with the best available technologies while fostering competitive pricing and innovation.

The rejection of Meta’s proposal highlights the competitive and rapidly evolving nature of the AI landscape. Tech giants like Apple and Meta are continually exploring new AI technologies to enhance their products and services. Privacy, security, and user experience remain pivotal considerations in these strategic decisions.

Apple’s decision underscores the importance of privacy and security in the integration of AI technologies. As companies strive to incorporate advanced AI features into their products, maintaining user trust through robust privacy measures is critical. Apple’s emphasis on privacy not only aligns with its brand values but also sets a benchmark for the industry.
