The iPhone 17 Pro models may see a significant design overhaul, with Apple reportedly moving away from titanium in favour of aluminium and glass. The potential shift signals a departure from the current design language, which has focused on strength and lightweight materials for its Pro models.

Apple’s current Pro models use a titanium frame, praised for being lightweight yet robust. However, sources close to The Information suggest that the iPhone 17 Pro will ditch titanium in favour of an aluminium frame.

iPhone 17 Pro to use aluminium and glass?

While the reason for the switch remains unclear, the move could indicate a broader rethink of the device’s aesthetics and engineering.

The redesign doesn’t stop at the frame. Reports suggest that the back of the iPhone 17 Pro will adopt a part-aluminium, part-glass construction.

The top portion of the back is rumoured to feature a large, rectangular aluminium camera bump, marking a departure from the glass bump seen in recent models. Meanwhile, the bottom half will retain its glass finish, ensuring compatibility with wireless charging.

Camera upgrade led to design change?

The inclusion of a larger, aluminium-made rectangular camera bump raises questions about potential upgrades to the iPhone 17 Pro’s camera system.

While specific details are scarce, the redesign hints at substantial changes, possibly to accommodate advanced camera hardware or new features.

The glass-aluminium combination might also aim to balance aesthetics with functionality. The aluminium camera bump could offer added durability, while the glass bottom would maintain seamless wireless charging capabilities.

Speculations are rife

With nearly a year to go before the iPhone 17’s official unveiling, these rumours remain unconfirmed. Apple’s design choices often remain under wraps until closer to launch, but future leaks, including CAD renderings, may provide more clarity.

For now, the reported changes suggest Apple is reimagining its Pro models, potentially blending innovation with practicality.

If true, the move away from titanium and the addition of new materials could mark a fresh chapter in the iPhone’s evolution. Whether this new approach will resonate with users remains to be seen, but the rumours are already stirring excitement for what’s to come.
