US government gets back to work after Senate ends shutdown

Congress had faced a deadline of 11:59 pm on Thursday to raise the government's borrowing authority or risk a default on its obligations.

"The bottom line is the government shutdown has hurt the US economy," Standard and Poor's said in a statement as the US Congress finally resolved the stalemate over a new budget and raising the debt ceiling.
