Coal Scam: Delhi court holds ex-secretary H C Gupta and others guilty of corruption, criminal conspiracy
The case pertains to alleged irregularities in allocation of Moira and Madhujore (North and South) coal blocks in West Bengal to VMPL. In September 2012, the CBI had registered an FIR in the case.
The central government is committed to providing adequate protection to performing officers while being zero-tolerant towards corruption, Union minister Jitendra Singh said on Tuesday.
Besides the jail term, the court also imposed a fine of Rs one lakh each on the three convicts.
Former Coal Secretary H C Gupta on Monday told a special court that then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had given the "final approval" for allocation of coal block to Kamal Sponge Steel and Power Ltd (KSSPL), a charge refuted by CBI which said the then premier was "kept in the dark".
