For those of you who have still not left us to go catch the (riveting) Wimbledon final, it’s goodbye from us here at Firstpost. Join us again for the 3rd ODI on Tuesday where we could see a couple of new faces make their debut for India.

Until then, Happy Wimbledon final day, folks!

MAN OF THE MATCH: The award goes to Murali Vijay (rather odd, I must add) for his best ever ODI score of 72. He is a happy man.

“I wasn’t getting my flow right but still helped in the opening partnership. The wicket was much better today, a bit on the slower side but we adjusted to it. Definitely fancied a 100, bit disappointed I threw it away”

July 12, 2015, 20:47:56 (IST)
Ajinkya Rahane: Were looking for 280-290 but we batted pretty well and partnership between Vijay and me was crucial and later with Rayudu. Wicket was slow early but got even slower in second innings and we have a good experienced attack with quality spinners. Bowled in right areas and fielding was right up there

Chigumbara, honest in his assessment:   Losing three wickets in first 11 overs made us lose today, something we need to work on from next game.

Stylish performance of the match (whatever that means) goes to Madziva.

Bhuvi got the hero of the match today. (I think that’s Man of the match?)

This game was over, in reality, a while back. The Zimbabwe tail was just going through their motions for a while after they were six down. In the end, India’s effort on the field – despite a couple of drops – took them home convincingly. Bhuvneshwar was spectacular with the new ball and old. And he, in my book, is the man of the match.

It’s all over  in Harare! Bhuvneshwar picks up his fourth wicket and it’s a series win for India. No late drama this around, it’s a clinical display from Rahane’s men.

Zimbabwe 209 all out. Its a 62-run victory.

After 48 overs, Zimbabwe 204/9.

A very good over from Kulkarni who mixes up slower ones with a couple of good yorkers. One of those yorkers beat both batsman and the keeper and went for 4.

It’s tiebreaker in the 2nd meanwhile at you-know-where…

The end is near..

Bhuvi comes back and picks up his 3rd. Its Rahane with a good sliding catch again. The duo have had a field day so far. Cremer is finally gone after some dogged resistance, made 27 off 42 balls.

After 47 overs, Zimbabwe 197/9

After 46 overs, Zimbabwe 195/8 (Cremer 27, Tiripano 4**)**

A fairly ordinary over from Kulkarni ends with a half tracketr that Tiripano pulls over midwicket for 4.

Action packed over! FINALLY! There is someone listening to our prayers!

Mutumbami finally realises that Zimbabwe need to get a move on, cracking a couple of boundaries in the fine-leg region off the first two balls. He skies the third ball to long-off to give Binny his first wicket of the day.

Couple of deliveries later, in one of those rare cricketing occurences, Madziva is run-out without facing a ball. 0 off 0. A brillliant direct hit – again – from Rahane catches him short.

Cremer still has the time to hit a four of the last ball. A outside to third man.

14 runs, 2 wickets. Phew!

After 45 overs, Zimbabwe 190/8 (Cremer 27, Tiripano 0**)**

After 44 overs, Zimbabwe 176/6 (Mutumbami 21, Cremer 24**)**

The crowd have really been the brightest part of today’s match for Zimbabwe. They are cheering for every run now as if there is a chance for them to win this. Great to see. Bhuvi concedes 5 in that over with a streaky boundary off the outside edge.

July 12, 2015, 20:02:43 (IST)

After 43 overs, Zimbabwe 171/6 (Mutumbami 19, Cremer 21**)**

Cremer finally gets a boundary after what seemed like ages – after 12 overs to be precise – as he sweeps Axar well. There was a run-out chance in the end but Rahane’s throw was too high for Uthappa to get the bails off in time. Eight runs from it.

After 42 overs, Zimbabwe 163/6 (Mutumbami 18, Cremer 14**)**

Bhuvi back into the attack and as miserly as he’s been all afternoon concedes just two runs. A couple of delveries in the over came back in sharply. 7-3-21-2 is Bhuvi’s figures now.

July 12, 2015, 19:53:49 (IST)

After 41 overs, Zimbabwe 161/6 (Mutumbami 17, Cremer 13**)**

One consequence of the new powerplay rules – 5 allowed outside in the last 10 – means spinners will be increasingly used there. Axar into the attack and concedes just two runs.

Meanwhile, Federer after losing the first set, has a break point at 2-2 in the second.

After 40 overs, Zimbabwe 159/6 (Mutumbami 17, Cremer 11**)**

A couple of close run out chances in that over for India. Bhajji with a direct hit that is referred to (but not out) and a shy at the stumps of the last ball. 5 runs from that over as hosts require a miracle – 113 from 10 overs.

After 39 overs, Zimbabwe 154/6 (Mutumbami 14, Cremer 9**)**

Another steady over from Binny. (I think I have said that quite a few times already) Accurate on the off stump and 4 singles from that over. Both teams seem to be going through the motions here.

After 38 overs, Zimbabwe 150/6 (Mutumbami 12, Cremer 7**)**

I think its safe to say none of these Zimbabwe batsmen are Tennis fans. They seem to be in no hurry to go anywhere with this game. Dhawal comes back into the attack and concedes just 4 runs. Tries out the bouncer too but nothing comes of it. Brings out a couple of off-cutters as well. Required rate is over 10 in case you were wondering.

July 12, 2015, 19:37:58 (IST)

After 37 overs, Zimbabwe 146/6 (Mutumbami 9, Cremer 6**)**

This game is meandering now as Wimbledon action heats up. Anyway I digress. Binny comes back into the attack and concedes 6 runs. Nice and full for the most part but singles are there for the taking. Can India get this wrapped up? Last match they were guilty of letting things drift from about the same point..

Harbhajan’s figures read 10.0  0  29  1. Really should have had more wickets. Bhajji was close to his best today, getting turn and bounce.

After 36 overs, Zimbabwe 140/6 (Mutumbami 5, Cremer 4**)**

4 runs from Bhajji pa in that over as he continues to cramp the right handers for room from around the wicket. Cremer tried a reverse sweep to break the shackles but could manage just a single.

Attacking over from Bhajji with close-in fielders and tossing the ball up. Zimbabwe seem to have gone into a shell after that double-blow as just a single comes off that over.

A wicketless over there for India after the chaos of the previous over. Patel concedes just 1. Mutumbami with a missed heave-ho in that over that almost hit the stumps. This looks like it’ll be over quickly for India.

OUT! Another one in the same over as Raza falls too. That’s two set batsmen gone in the same over. This time its Harbhajan’s wicket but only just about as Raza edged one to Uthappa who dropped it almost before gobbling up the ballooning rebound.

OUT! That’s a big wicket in the circumstances for India. Chibhabha is turned back by Raza and Ajinkya Rahane with a bullet direct hit at the non-strikers end finds Chamu shot. Uthappa will be a happy man. Well, played Chibhabha.

After 31 overs, Zimbabwe 130/4 (Chibhabha 72**, Raza 17)**

Axar goes for runs too now as Chamu looks to make the most of Uthappa’s reprieve. He drove the second ball away handsomely over the covers. Eight off that over.

July 12, 2015, 19:05:01 (IST)

Uthappa had a torrid time behind the stumps last match as well, letting bye-boundaries and dropping a catch.

Vijay’s next over has gone for 12 runs as the Sikandar looks get a move on, stepping down and lofting it over long off. Three other twos in the over as he brings out his sweep. This should be the last over for Monk.

After 30 overs, Zimbabwe 122/4 (Chibhabha 65, Raza 16)

After 29 overs, Zimbabwe 110/4 (Chibhabha 65, Raza 4)

Oh, dear! Uthappa misses an easy stumping of Axar Patel’s last ball of the over. Chibhabha had given up after missing the ball but Uthappa had no clue where the ball was as it had rolled past him. Big let off there. A good over for Axar till then as he was putting the pressure on with tight bowling.

After 28 overs, Zimbabwe 109/4 (Chibhabha 65, Raza 3)

Another over for Vijay and its another quick, tight one from him. No danger for the batsmen though. Just 4 runs.

After 27 overs, Zimbabwe 105/4 (Chibhabha 64, Raza 1)

Chamu is targeting the long-on region, going against Axar Patel’s turn and lofting it. Gets a 4 and 2 in that region. 7 runs off that over.

After 26 overs, Zimbabwe 98/4 (Chibhabha 57, Raza 1)

Interesting call from Rahane to give the ball to Vijay for his first ever ODI over. With a new batsman in, no less. He does well, however, bowling a tight line ala Suresh Raina. Just three off it.

July 12, 2015, 18:47:32 (IST)

Axar gets Williams as he plays across the line and lets the ball through between the bat and pads and the off stump goes for a toss. The ball turned in just a little bit. Good ball, that.

Meanwhile, Chamu is looking to get a move on as he drove Axar past cover drive after reaching 50.

After 25 overs, Zimbabwe 95/4 (Chibhabha 55)

July 12, 2015, 18:43:35 (IST)

After 24 overs, Zimbabwe 90/3 (Chibhabha 50, Sean Williams 20)

FIFTY up for Chamu Chibhabha. He started off all guns blazing, hitting a hat-trick of fours off Kulkarni but slowed down after that. Has taken him 78 balls. Williams took a single off Bhajji’s first ball and Chamu plays out four dot balls before sneaking in a tight single of the last ball to bring up his milestone.

July 12, 2015, 18:41:03 (IST)

After 23 overs, Zimbabwe 88/3 (Chibhabha 49, Sean Williams 19)

Much needed boundary for Zimbabwe in that over, as Chamu ondrives Axar to wide long-on for a four. Axar rushing it a little bit here.

184 runs required from 27 overs, RRR now up to 6.81.

Preview Harare: Though the India won the first One-Day International (ODI) against hosts Zimbabwe on Friday, it was far from a comprehensive victory. The national cricket selectors took a step forward when they gave Ajinkya Rahane the captaincy – investing a huge amount of confidence in the Mumbaikar to lead the second string side as seniors, including Test skipper Virat Kohli and regular limited overs captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni opted to rest. [caption id=“attachment_2338476” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] ![India celebrate a fall of a wicket during the first ODI in Harare. AP Photos.](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/india_celebrate_ODI_ZIm_AP.jpg) India celebrate a fall of a wicket during the first ODI in Harare. AP Photos.[/caption] Though the start has not been great, Rahane would like to repay the faith by winning the second ODI at the Harare Sports Club on Sunday to seal a series win. Ranked No.2 in ODIs, India barely managed to win – by four runs – against the African side, who are ranked way below at No.11. If Ambati Rayudu, who scored his second ODI century, and Stuart Binny’s sixth wicket partnership not clicked, India would have been into the match 0-1 down. The duo, both of whom scored their highest ODI totals, came good to score a 160-run stand which saved the match for the visitors. Rahane also scored a good-looking 34 before being caught at slip. But apart from these three, Indian batting order completely failed in the absence of the seniors. The bench strength faltered especially when needed, struggling against a team which is not even in the top-10 of ODI rankings. Rahane’s men will need to come good if they want to win on Sunday and seal the series in their favour. No one can question the talent of players like Murali Vijay, Manoj Tiwary and Robin Uthappa but they need to deliver in the absence of Shikhar Dhawans, Rohit Sharmas and the Suresh Rainas. The Indian bowlers also did not rise up to the occasion. They were more than capable of halting the Zimbabweans much earlier than leaving it to the last over, and literally the last ball, for the victory. Also, the number of extras was a concern. India in total gave away 18 extras, including nine wides and eight byes while defending a modest total of 255. One can say that India did not get match practice to accilimatise to the conditions but in modern day cricket, these players are expected to deliver whatever the situation. Another important thing that will be on India’s mind is the fact that if they wish to remain second in the ODI team rankings, they must win the series 3-0. A clean sweep will hold Rahane and his men in good stead and also solidify his position when the other seniors come back in to the side. IANS
