Goodnight, folks!

June 11, 2015, 21:14:37 (IST)

Echoing the sentiments of the majority of the Indian fans? The Indian players did show a lot of fight, but Oman’s quality saw them through.

June 11, 2015, 21:12:52 (IST)
Commentators still discussing the goal-that-wasn’t, saying it was the wrong call. Even if Robin Singh did not get the final touch, he was clearly interfering with the play and by rule that’s offside. Referee had a good game overall and he got that one absolutely spot on, in my book.

Sunil Chhetri: Should not have conceded the penalty. Was not good for the morale, should have gone to the half-time as 1-1.

FULL TIME! Heartbreak for India as Oman wins the match 2-1. But Men in Blue can be proud of their performance today. Found lacking in quality but not in heart. Fought till the final whistle.
June 11, 2015, 21:01:26 (IST)
Oman almost score on the counter. Inches away from the far post. India still barely in this game.
June 11, 2015, 21:00:25 (IST)
CHHETRI APPEALS FOR PENALTY! But referee says nothing doing. Sunil latches on to one of those high balls behind defence but the defender gets ahead of him in time. Soft appeal, to be fair.
June 11, 2015, 20:59:16 (IST)
Four minutes of stoppage time.

Four minutes of stoppage time.
June 11, 2015, 20:58:06 (IST)
Yet another high ball out of defense from India, yet again an attack breaks down. Time running out for India here. A minute plus stoppage time left.

Commentator announces over 19,000 fans in attendance at Kanteerva today. Excellent turnout in Bengaluru. Well done!

SUBSTITUTION FOR INDIA:  Jeje Lalpekhlua (Mohun Bagan AC) replaces Robin Singh. Can the electric forward who lit the ISL up with Chennaiyin do it for India?
June 11, 2015, 20:51:13 (IST)

Subrata – who hasn’t put a foot wrong so far – did….put a foot wrong there as he’s caught on the ball for too long. Risky from Paul there.

2-1 to Oman after 82 mins.

June 11, 2015, 20:49:11 (IST)
India looking to play the long-ball to their forwards too early. 15 minutes is a lot of time in a football match. Robin Singh caught offside twice in the last two minutes trying to run behind the defence.
June 11, 2015, 20:43:49 (IST)

SUBSTITUTION FOR INDIA: Saityasen Singh replaces Jackichand Singh, his teammate at Royal Wahingdoh FC

India looking to push on. Better from the home team in the last few minutes. 2-1 after 74 minutes as Oman look to hold on.

June 11, 2015, 20:40:55 (IST)
A short corner caught Oman defence by surprise as a cross from the right flank was seemingly turned in by a defender. But Robin Singh – clearly in a ‘offiside position’ – is adjudged to have touched the ball. Replays not conclusive.

GOALLLLLLLLLL INDIA!! A short corner is converted….. OR IS IT?!? OFFSIDE GIVEN!

Stil 2-1 to Oman.

June 11, 2015, 20:35:44 (IST)
OMAN SUBSTITUTION: A defensive midfielder on for a forward as goalscorer Al Hosani taken off. Clear indication of Coach Paul Le Guen’s indication.
June 11, 2015, 20:34:05 (IST)

But hit straight at the wall. Jackichand fouled as India tried to counter-attack.

Still 2-1 to Oman after 65 minutes.

June 11, 2015, 20:33:03 (IST)
Freekick in a dangerous position for Oman just outside the box on India’s left side. Good distance to life the ball up an over the wall.
June 11, 2015, 20:31:59 (IST)
The commentator reminds us that India have never beaten Oman. There’s always a first time, right?
June 11, 2015, 20:29:53 (IST)
SUBSTITUTE FOR INDIA: Shenaj Singh is taken off, probably with the yellow card in mind, and Pune FC’s Dhanpal Ganesh comes on.

June 11, 2015, 20:27:53 (IST)
India working tirelessly off the ball but this is turning out to be one-way traffic now. Offering nothing offensively, the men in blue. Constantine must be thinking about changes.
June 11, 2015, 20:26:53 (IST)
Sunil and Robin combine at the other end but a wayward shot from Chhetri lands comfortably beyond the goal line into the running tracks at Kanteerva.
June 11, 2015, 20:25:44 (IST)
Oman all over the Indian defenders there! Three good chances back-to-back after some neat one-touch football. A bit too over elaborated by Oman, maybe? Aresnal-esque attempt to walk the ball into the goal there.
June 11, 2015, 20:23:23 (IST)
Yellow card for India’s Sehnaj Singh. A nasty elbow from the Indian midfielder there. A bit lucky to get away with Yellow for that one, Shenaj. Unnecessary.
June 11, 2015, 20:22:01 (IST)
Oman playing some neat stuff here. Excellent pass and move football, but final pass lacking. India needs to be careful they don’t concede here as Oman clearly on the up.
June 11, 2015, 20:17:48 (IST)
Better this from India’s forwards. The brilliantly-named Jackichand Singh plays Robin through on the right flank before a good tackle from Oman stops them in their tracks.

Oman almost get another early goal. Qasim lets fly from outside the box, goes past Subrata’s post.

And India follow that up with a long range effort of their own. Tamer of the two efforts.

June 11, 2015, 20:14:46 (IST)
Back underway at Kanteerva. No goal from the kickoff this time around. No changes from the managers.
June 11, 2015, 20:09:56 (IST)

India’s midfield getting stuck in but Oman’s quality showing in the final third as the visitors are able to create chances at will, mainly from the flanks. Constantine would want the back four to stay tighter as the gaps between center-backs and full-backs bit too much at times.

As for going forward, a moment of individual brilliance brought India back in the game. But the forwards been largely quite otherwise. Arnab Mondal’s chance from the corner remains the only genuine chance we created. Too many times the midfielders lose the ball looking for an aerial through ball behind Oman’s defence. Bit more patience required, if Oman’s defense can be breached.

June 11, 2015, 20:01:54 (IST)
All to play for in the next 45. Can India pull this back? Stay with us for more.
June 11, 2015, 20:01:49 (IST)
HALF-TIME! Oman lead 2-1 going into the break with goals at either end of half sandwiched by a special goal from Chhetri. Constantine will be disappointed with his defense a tad bit. Too shaky, too many last-ditch tackles, one of them resulting in a penalty that lead to the second goal.

Well, well, wel! Looked like the referee had awarded another penalty for Oman but he’s booked Al Hosani for a DIVE! Good call again by the referee as the defender had won the ball legally.
June 11, 2015, 19:54:57 (IST)
India will be disappointed at conceding the second goal before half time. Definite penalty that, no question. Dhana was not given a yellow for that.
June 11, 2015, 19:51:15 (IST)
GOAL OMAN! No lapses the second time around for Al Hosni. A calm finish. Paul beaten comfortably.
June 11, 2015, 19:49:48 (IST)
Oman score…. but the referee asks for a retake! Paul was well-beaten there. Can he save it this time?

PREVIEW Bengaluru: An acid test awaits the Indian football team as it gets ready to host higher-ranked Oman in the second round opening match of AFC qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup here tomorrow. Though India have made progress under Englishman Stephen Constantine, beating Nepal in a two-legged preliminary qualifier in March, the chief coach knows it’s going to require an extraordinary effort to emerge with a victory against Oman who, at 101, are ranked 40 places higher than the hosts in the pecking order. [caption id=“attachment_2291418” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Constantine has put his team through some rigorous training ahead of the crucial home leg against Oman. PTI Constantine has put his team through some rigorous training ahead of the crucial home leg against Oman. PTI[/caption] The side will be led by Arnab Mondal and not Subrata Paul, Constantine said on the eve of the match. The Indians have been training with renewed vigour for these matches. Last Saturday, Constantine put the team through a boot camp organised by the Indian Army on the ASC campus here. It was a team-building exercise, meant to help push the side over the line. In the four meetings against Oman so far, India have conceded 11 goals while winning just one fixture, losing two and drawing one. The last time the two teams clashed was in Muscat in February 2012 when Oman won the friendly 5-1. The visitors would be keen to repeat the win while India would be drawing some confidence from their 2-0 and 0-0 results against Nepal in the first round. The match at the Kanteerva Stadium is a chance for Oman to erase the bad memories of narrowly missing out on qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. Instead of the usual practice of choosing the experienced players, Constantine has pinned lot of hopes on young brigade, which is reflected in the 26 probables he picked, including the likes of Jackichand Singh, C K Vineeth, Dhanpal Ganesh and Sehnaj Singh. Constantine will like to focus more on strengthening the middle of the field as he is wary of the Omani goal threat. The task will be cut out for Mondal and Co in the absence of Sandesh Jhingan, who has been ruled out due to a shoulder injury. Sehnaj Singh and Eugenson Lyngdoh - both will be easy picks as they performed exceedingly well this season. Jackichand, who was voted as Player of the I-League, besides Vineeth or Seityasen Singh, will give a much-needed boost to Lyngdoh and Sehnaj. In the striking department, Constantine will have the services of Robin Singh and Sunil Chhetri, who have scored 46 goals between them for India. Oman will enter the match as favourites though they are without the services of key players Jaber Al Owaisi and Mohammed Al Shiyabi, who have been ruled out due to injuries. Oman coach Paul Le Guen will hope to get a good game out of Ali Salim Al Nahar, who has played 23 internationals. Moreover, Guen will also heavily count on striker AbdulAziz Al Muqbali, who has the distinction of scoring a record 16 goals in 44 games. Muqbali will be helped by Raed Ibrahim and Qasim Said, who bring to the table pace and deception. Number 10 Imad Al Hosni is another star campaigner, having scored 36 goals in 112 games. Ali Al Habsi will man the goal for the visitors. Besides Oman, the luck of the draw has pitted India in the same group as Iran, who are ranked 41, besides lowly Turkmenistan (173) Guam (174). With two teams to qualify for the next round, India will have to play out of their skins to make any progress. PTI
