Preview: The Indian football team will renew its quest to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup with a qualifying game against Guam at the Guam National Football Stadium here on Tuesday. This will be India’s second match of the second round of qualifiers. India and Guam are in Group D along with Oman, Iran and Turkmenistan for the preliminary league with the top two finishers progressing to the next phase of the competition. India lost their first match of the group 1-2 against Oman while Guam defeated Turkmenistan 1-0. India, 141 in the rankings will need to put their best foot forward against the 174th-ranked Guam, as the visitors seek their first win not only in Group D but also in the Pacific region. AFP[/caption] Despite India’s loss against Oman, they offered hope for an improved performance and will be looking to take some aspects of that game on Tuesday. Guam coach Gary White said that they are looking forward to the game. “It’s likely to be a competitive one. Win or perish - both teams would go out to get those three points. We have watched India’s match against Oman and must say that there seems to be a new life in the Indian team. They looked much organised and it will be difficult to break them down,” White said, in a release on Tuesday. India’s coach Stephen Constantine isn’t willing to read much into the rankings disparity between the two teams. “We are not in a position to look at the FIFA Rankings. Guam having won their last match against Turkmenistan is going to be encouraged, stay motivated and be ready to play,” Constantine said. Constantine has appointed striker Sunil Chhetri as the captain for the match, who stressed on taking “one match at a time.” “If you take one match at a time, the target stays lesser. So right now, we have moved on from our last match and are focussing on Guam,” he said. “Guam has definitely improved a lot from the last time we played them. On the surface one didn’t give them much of a chance against Turkmenistan but this squad is a different side altogether. Their win speaks volumes of the improvement and we have huge respect for Guam,” Chhetri added (IANS).

That’s that then — India wilted against a side 33 ranks below them — more proof that the FIFA Rankings don’t really matter when it comes to the action on the pitch. Guam were quicker, more inventive, the better passers and had a plan to hit India down the flanks. They got it right and were incredibly disciplined in their tackle too — with India resorting to instinctive long-ball play and pulling down their opponents when beaten on the challenge. Guam run out deserved winners.

FULL-TIME: Guam beat India 2-1 for a historic victory. Their rise just carries on, doesn’t it? The 174-ranked country is now top of the table in Group D of the AFC 2nd round World Cup 2018 qualifiers with two wins from two games. India have lost both their matches.
June 16, 2015, 13:50:35 (IST)
90+3 minutes: GOAL! Chhetri finally heads in one of those crosses from the right. Scant consolation though.
June 16, 2015, 13:46:55 (IST)
90 minutes: Three minutes added on as another Rino Anto cross from the right is headed towards goal by Lobo — it’s past the far post again.
June 16, 2015, 13:43:33 (IST)
86 minutes: India’s build-up much better now but it’s also because Guam have dropped off. This game is won, certainly. Vineeth manages to cut in and shoot from the left wing but the shot is blocked and trickles away for a throw-in.

Substitution: Naputi on for Malcolm now. Malcolm was superb and got the assist for the second goal.
June 16, 2015, 13:38:38 (IST)
80 minutes: Early cross from the right after some patient build-up from India and Robin Singh connects with the header only to see it go wide. Why couldn’t they play like this from the off?
June 16, 2015, 13:37:37 (IST)
4,253 fans in the stadium

Substitute: Mariano off for goal-scoring hero Nicklaw
June 16, 2015, 13:32:31 (IST)
75 minutes: India finally get a shot on target and Guam break immediately at the other end – Subrata came off his line, stuck a palm out and blocked the ball which ran outside the box. The keeper regains composure and passes it out of danger. Nicklaw was the man he stopped.
June 16, 2015, 13:28:22 (IST)
71 minutes: Vineeth weaves his way past a couple of defenders but continues doing it and eventually gets tangled in his own feet before getting robbed of the ball in the box. India have not had a single clear chance yet.

67 minutes: Jeje Lalpekhlua comes on for Jackichand.
June 16, 2015, 13:18:57 (IST)
61 minutes: GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!! What a fine strike as Nicklaw finds a couple of yards of space, swivels, beats and shoots on the turn to put Gual 2-0 up. Stunning.
June 16, 2015, 13:12:27 (IST)
54 minutes: Superb move from Guam as Nicklaw races past Dhanachandra’s challenge and sets up Cunliffe just near the ‘D’. Cunliffe’s attempt to slip Malcolm through was blocked though. And then India clear…
June 16, 2015, 13:10:03 (IST)
53 minutes: India string together a few passes and Vineeth cuts in from the left before setting up Lobo who misses the target from 30 yards out.
June 16, 2015, 13:04:29 (IST)
46 minutes: Ryan Guy fakes a freekick and Cunliffe takes it — it’s inches wide of the near post. Wow.
June 16, 2015, 13:03:30 (IST)
Substitutes: Two HT changes from Constantine – Lobo is on for Lyngdoh and Ganesh on for Sehnaj. That’s the two central midfielders out.

Half-time, Guam 1-0 India: If you’re an Indian fan, then there’s absolutely no reason to be pleased about this half. There’s not a single move worth talking about and they haven’t strung together more than three passes it seems. Sunil Chhetri is isolated on top and hasn’t been in the game at all. Lyngdoh is shackled with the early booking and Sehnaj Singh is the only one trying to block spaces. Arnab Mondal has been solid as ever but Guam have put incredible pressure on the team with quick direct pasing and running down the wings. India conceded through a set-piece and it shows the vulnerability of that back four.
June 16, 2015, 12:42:40 (IST)
45 minutes: India’s second shot of the match goes 20 feet over the posts. Slight improvement to previous shot. The visitors have been appalling.

GOALLLLL!! 41 minutes: What a way to concede — a long throw-in from Ryan Guy is straight to McDonald and the tall defender has glanced it into the far corner. No doubts this time, it is 1-0 to Guam.
June 16, 2015, 12:33:56 (IST)
34 minutes: Guam shoot from outside the box and the commentator and the crowd scream ‘Goal!’ But then Subrata calmly picks up the ball and takes a run up for goalkick – the ball in fact rippled the back of the net after boucing off the advertisement boards and confused everybody. Still 0-0.
June 16, 2015, 12:29:37 (IST)
32 minutes – close! Nicklaw set up with a fine cross from Malcolm but he’s put it over! How did he miss that? Oh and he’s hurt too – collided with the post and that’s a hit straight to the groin area. Must have hurt…
June 16, 2015, 12:28:18 (IST)
32 minutes: India’s first shot on goal flies 30 feet above the posts.
June 16, 2015, 12:27:05 (IST)
31 minutes: India break down the right through Jackichand and his cross to the far post is intercepted. The play ensuing results to nothing.
June 16, 2015, 12:26:32 (IST)
28 minutes: Sehnaj floors Cunliffe and Guam loop in a freekick from 35 yards out – it’s headed clear and the corner almost makes India pay — Cunliffe’s shot is blocked though. That one was on target.

June 16, 2015, 12:20:39 (IST)
22 minutes: Nicklaw is through down the left channel and only a last ditch tackle from Mondal saves India. Wow – Guam are really pushing.
June 16, 2015, 12:19:42 (IST)
21 minutes: India have simply not had a spell of possession. Lyngdoh is restricting his tackling due to the booking and Robin Singh has got into a heated argument with DeLaGarza. Guam have pressed hard and passed brilliantly. The overlapping down the right is hurting India. Subrata Paul is urging the team to plya narrower
June 16, 2015, 12:13:53 (IST)
17 minutes: Ryan Guy takes a shot from the corner of the box on the right – about 20 yards off and the shot is just over! What a fine move which also saw Lee overlap from right back.
June 16, 2015, 12:12:35 (IST)
15 minutes: Cunliffe and Malcolm teasing Indian defenders on the right – moving through the channels brilliantly and exploiting the width. India need to be wary — one of those crosses will connect.
June 16, 2015, 12:09:11 (IST)
13 minutes: Cunliffe runs away down the right, flicks over an Indian defender and crosses in but Mondal is in there to head clear. Guam are asserting themselves now.
June 16, 2015, 12:06:21 (IST)
10 minutes: Lyngdoh goes into a challenge from behind and it’s a yellow card. Easy decision.

June 16, 2015, 12:04:09 (IST)
5 minutes: Shane Malcolm breaks through the right channel — an area which was exploited by Oman too — and Subrata has come to come off his line and block the attacker just in time. Half-chance — Malcolm just didn’t pull the trigger in time.
June 16, 2015, 12:00:57 (IST)
2 minutes: India get the ball back after a scrambling start and play it around from the back — however, they impatiently play a long ball towards Jackichand and he is muscled away. Possession is back to Guam. There was absolutely no need to play that ball.
June 16, 2015, 11:57:54 (IST)
And we’ve kicked-off!

The Guam team does the Inifresi — a local way of forming a huddle with a man in the middle motivating them with loud aggressive chants.
