D Gukesh vs Ding Liren LIVE Updates: India's D Gukesh trails 1-0 in World Chess Championship 2024

D Gukesh lost the Round 1 against Ding Liren in the World Chess Championship on Monday and currently trails 1-0 in the 14-game series. As he takes on Lirend in Round 2 in Singapore today (26 November), we bring you all the latest scores and updates.

D Gukesh vs Ding Liren World Chess Championship 2024 Round 2 LIVE Updates: Indian chess Grandmaster D Gukesh will look to stage a quick comeback in the ongoing World Chess Championship 2024 on Tuesday (26 November) against Ding Liren after losing the first match on Monday (25 November) . The reigning world champion Liren from China stunned the chess world on Monday when he defeated the favourite Gukesh with black pieces and played French defense in Round 1 of the World Chess Championship 2024 and took a 1-0 lead in the 14-game series . The World Chess Championship 2024 consists of 14 classical games and the player to reach 7.5 points first will be declared the new world chess champion.

If the scores remain tied after the 14 games then a tie-breaker will be played. Liren won the World Chess Championship in 2023 by beating Russian GM Ian Nepomniachtchi in a tie-breaker and will now be looking to consolidate his lead against Gukesh.

Gukesh, who won the FIDE Candidates earlier this year and helped India win gold in the Open section at Chess Olympiad 2024, was seen as the favourite coming into the World Chess Championship 2024, but the lack his lack of experience was exposed in Round 1.

Gukesh pays price for lack of experience vs Liren

For example midway through the match by playing 27…fxe6, instead of the solid 27…Bxe6, Liren gave Gukesh a chance to escape. However, the 18-year-old Indian Grandmaster squandered the opportunity with 30.Qc2 instead of the critical 30.Bc5, which could have offered significant tactical compensation and a genuine opportunity to complicate the game.

Gukesh has been advised by legendary women’s chess player Susan Polgar to work on his mindset and time management . Liren took a lot of time to make his moves at the start of Round 1 but towards the end it was Gukesh who struggled to manage time, playing moves that he would not have ideally.

The second game between D Gukesh and Ding Liren will take place on Tuesday, 26th November at 2.30 PM IST in India.
