Wimbledon showing takes Bopanna to world No 5 ranking

Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna reached a career-high ranking today of World No 5 on the ATP World Tour Doubles rankings. At fifth position with 5,380 points, the Wimbledon 2013 semi-finalist is also for the first time the highest ranked Indian. Bopanna’s rankings took a huge jump post his performance at the semifinals of Gentlemen’s Doubles at Wimbledon with French partner Edouard Roger-Vasselin, where they put up an intense fight against top-seeded Bryan Brothers before bowing out of the tournament. At SW19, Rohan also reached the quarterfinals of the Mixed Doubles with his Chinese partner Zie Jheng. Reuters[/caption] Commenting on the joy of his career high while on a break from the tour, Rohan said, “It is great to have been ranked fifth on the rankings ladder. It is an extremely proud moment for my team and myself, as this ranking is a true testament of the many years of hard work, focus and determination. Being for the first time, the highest ranked Indian makes this all that more special and is an added motivation to perform better with every passing game.” Rohan who started this year partnering American Rajeev Ram, renewed his partnership with veteran Indian star Mahesh Bhupathi, and won his only title of the year in Marsielles with Colin Flemming. For Wimbledon this year, Rohan partnered with the French Roger-Vasselin who as a team made their individual semifinal debut appearances. Commenting on the future of this partnership, Rohan said “It is too early to speculate, though Eduardo and I are in conversation on continuing this partnership given the great run we have had in the two weeks at Wimbledon.” While taking a break from the tour currently, Rohan is scheduled to hit the hard court season with the Citi Open in Washington before proceeding to the Masters Coupe Rogers in Montreal, Canada.
