In the men's singles final of 2017 Wimbledon, seven-time winner Roger Federer will be aiming for an unprecedented eighth Wimbledon title and surpass tennis legend Pete Sampras’ record. But, in his path stands the Croatian Marin Cilic who is approaching a maiden Wimbledon and second Grand Slam title.
Both Federer and Cilic come into the final with contrast victories. Federer defeated Tomas Berdych in straight sets 7-6, 7-6, 6-4, while Cilic was tested by Sam Querrey 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 7-5. With Federer's 36th birthday fast approaching, the evergreen Swiss will comfortably succeed Arthur Ashe, who was almost 32 when he won in 1975, as Wimbledon's most senior champion. Victory over Croatian giant Cilic will also give him a 19th career Grand Slam title and second in three majors this year after sweeping to a fifth Australian Open in January following a six-month absence.
For Cilic, its has been more of a dream campaign there at London. As Federer will be the favourite to lift the title, Cilic has a Herculean task to contain the in-form 35-year-old.
