Why Ravichandran Ashwin's wife announced birth of 2nd 'carrom' baby five days after delivery

Things just seem to be getting better for Ravichandran Ashwin with each passing day. After capping an immensely successful year, both with bat and ball, to eventually bag the ‘Cricketer of the Year’ and the ‘Test Cricketer of the Year’ accolades at the ICC Awards, the leading off-spinner became a father for the second time. His second daughter was born on 21 December, as announced by his wife Prithi on Twitter on 26 December. However, Prithi decided to reveal the news of the delivery of the second ‘carrom’ baby five days after her birth. Why, you wonder? She did not want to take the thunder away from her husband after the his double win at the ICC awards. Prithi, who had delivered the couple’s first child a year ago, shared the interesting story of how their second child came into the world, waiting out the cyclone Vardah that hit Chennai this month, as well as the fifth Test against England in the city.  Ashwin’s better half even said that her water might have broken on the final day of the Test at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium (known colloquially as Chepauk), which would have an epic story by itself.

Having finished a fantastic Test series against England earlier this month, emerging the leading wicket-taker with 28 scalps while making valuable contributions with the bat (four half-centuries), Ashwin now has nearly three weeks to spend some quality time with his wife and daughters. The one-day international leg of England’s ongoing tour kicks off on 15 January, with Pune, Cuttack and Kolkata set to host the fixtures. The ODIs then will make way for as many T20I games, the last of which will take place on 1 February. The limited-overs fixtures will see MS Dhoni return as captain of the Indian team. Incidentally, Dhoni did not get a mention in Ashwin’s acceptance speech after winning the ICC Awards, something that angered the 2011 World Cup-winning captain’s fans. The Tamil Nadu off-spinner played under Dhoni both in the national team across formats, as well as for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.
